I agree a semi or full auto shotgun will be nice and probably good in the field . i think the nostalgia of sxs for a bird shoot is what gets people. semi and auto shotguns seem to be better suited for home/self defense to me.

Rakshith,
There is something more to it apart from cultural preferences or historical traditions,IMO. A semi or a pump on a shoot are difficult to ascertain if they are loaded or unloaded. Also, I am merely echoing what was told to me than stating from first hand knowledge. Our American friends have to forgive me if I sound snobbish. Understanding of 'handling' is quite different in US from UK.A SXS or a O/U handles much better than a semi or a pump. The design attributes of an English game gun needs to be understood to appreciate this quality of handling. I am not saying that birds aren't killed without them. But, there are guns and then there are guns.
ASFAIK, No one carries full auto shotguns in the field i.e for hunting.
Best-
Vikram

Shooting here is a social activity and common for up to 15 guns to shoot together and there will be another 15-20 beaters and pickers up plus dogs plus game keepers so all in all it is not unusual to see 40-50 people in a shoot in close vicinity of each other.A semi or a pump on a shoot are difficult to ascertain if they are loaded or unloaded.
Safety being of paramount importance, a gun in which one cant ascertain whether its loaded or not isn't preferred.
Semi's are banned on many clay grounds too due to precisely the same reason.(esp the smaller ones since more people in a smaller space)
Yes yes i know put the plastic flag blah blah but the truth is try seeing that from across the field.
IF and a big if, there is an unsafe gun, it isnt uncommon to have the neighbour complain to the shoot captain or even leave the shoot or that drive.
It takes one unsafe action to spoil a shoot and when people have paid good money to do it, they expect a nice day out.
It also doesnt look good for the game keeper or the shoot captain for his shoot not entertaining the guests and getting a bad name.
The americans who come here to shoot dont shoot with semis or pumps either.
And as mentioned earlier please note that in upland hunting, a lot of walking is involved and they dont have loaders there.

I was reading the magazine posted by vikram in another thread http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 61#p142561.
In that i was reading the article on page 50, which is taking about game hunting guns. It is pretty informative article and covers this very topic, which we have debated here.
I love what he has mentioned in the end of the article
"dale spartas has being full time shooter with more than 250 magazine covers to his credit, wins clays events with his Side by Sides"

Lovely perspectives vikram shooter and ali..thanks.. what i reckon the british game bird scene is old school and like u said fine english guns and their handling attributes are different where as the americans love fire power and technology. to each their own...

well this thread asks for a choice between o/u vs sxs.
I say whatever one is comfortable with.
There is an old saying (not necessarily still valid)
O/u will get you more birds but sxs will get you more invitations.

Unfortunately we do.It is 3 firearms,an additional .22 if you are the member of a rifle association and 10 if you are a 'Renowned Shot'.This was done in the 1980's leading to distress sale of many fine guns. A couple of container loads of guns including many bespoke ones found it's way to foreign shores as owners sold their guns at what ever price they were offered instead of having them confiscated by the govt. .It is said that the present incumbent in the Home Ministry had a role to play in this.airgunner468 wrote:do u have any?
