can i carry my all india licensed handgun to kashmir
hi friends
i am travelling to kashmir with family for holidays just wondering if i can carry my all india licensed .357 mag hand gun along with me. i know the law permits me but with implementation of sec144 i am confused. please help and guide. as someone rightly said out here {that its better to have a gun and not need it than not to have a gun when you need it}.i would prefer carrying it with me so i can atleast feel confident instead of trusting the great j and k police.
thanks
ASHISH

Kashmir is not what you see here in news. Other then J&K police you will find CRPF, BSF, army soldiers at every 100 mtrs. Terrorist never target tourists there. Their fight is with govt and they target soldiers or armed persons only. Senior member could guide you better about laws, my suggestion is dont carry it openly when you are in kashmir as that could lead you in trouble.
Happy journey.

If Section 144 is in-force, u cannot conceal or open carry it for sure. If you are a traveller with an All India Licence, may be, u can carry it with you to your hotel room but not beyond that... Please check up again.
In Kashmir, lot of checking might be taking place, you will have to give unnecessary explanations to the authorities...& that too when you are with your family.
If i were you, with a very heavy heart, i would'nt have carried it with me. But that's me. I know how it feels when u r forced - not to carry.
Take care...

Don't carry it. Even if you feel that you might need it shoot the baddies, they will most likely spray you with an Ak. You might have the romantic notion that you will come to a booming rescue with one revolver but your chances are slim...I am saying this only in the context of a potential gunfight in Kashmir.

To avoid trouble and tension don't carry ur weapon to kashmir. coz as some one has already said people are checked every 100 mts and these crpf guys n all r not very nice to deal wid and moreover will try 2 harass u at every checkpoint as 2 show ur license and bull crap. They may even take you otherwise. Even at airport or railway station u will be required to go through serious procedures as u will be carying a firearm. Unless ur a Defence personnel dont carry ur weapon. N yes I totally second the idea that ur weapon will b no match for ak's brother. tc have a great trip.

Ash,
Presuming you have AIV, the geographical jurisdiction entry in your license might read "All India (except the State of J&K)". If so, it is self explanatory.

Sir, all the respected members have given very valid inputs. Carrying a weapon with u to J&K is the easiest and sureshot way of landing into trouble. The cops and the Army can and will frisk you at every checkpoint, can even detain you despite you having all the necessary documents. Especially when one is holidaying in J&K with family, it will be very embarassing and troublesome to undergo all this. Usually militants don't target tourists but a man with a revolver seems like a target shouting out loud to be shot .If not for publicity, the militants may target you for your weapon. Best is to be alert and not carry any weapon. If a militant strikes, rest assured there are enough battle-hardened soldiers and cops to do the needful. The last thing u want ,in a terror attack, is the Army and cops mistaking you for one of the terrorists and taking you out. At that time, they won't bother asking u whetheru have the license or not. And terrorists need not be bearded and in Pathani suit, carrying an AK. He may just have a pistol with/without silencer. So you would not be wanting to stand next to one holding your own Magnum, eh?!
Regards and happy holidaying.

And as far as J&K police is concerned,Sir, i have not seen a better police force in India which deals directly with insurgency. They are battle hardened, alert, physically very fit and know the tactics and modus operandi of the terrorists. The J&K police assists the Army in fighting insurgency.
Regards and happy holidaying.
