How to legally Convert DBBL Shotgun in to a show piece?

Post by ace » Sat May 21, 2011 4:05 pm

My friend got a DBBL shotgun in a very good condition and has sentiments attached to it (family hierloom). He is fed up of the hassles during elections and licence renewals etc. Wants to get rid of the licencing part (as a fire arm) but wants to keep the gun as a show piece. He is ready for the following options to make it a fire arm to non-fire arm:-

(a) Drill a hole through the chamber near the breech (like they do in the Army to covert rifles to DP rifles - drill purpose).

(b) Remove the firing pin, cocking assebly etc. and destroy them (gun with barrel, butt, trigger and locking devices only).

(c) Or any other way (please suggest)?

After all this modifications, the gun should be in the category of a show piece or toy etc. which can be hanged on the wall for ever without a licence.

I request all the legal eagles and gurus to guide me, how to go about doing it legally.

I find the view of your friend shocking and contradictory(shocking because I believe RKBA is our human right and fundamental right http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 15#p117785). He claims he has "sentiments" attached to it and and the same time he wants to destroy it's good condition and originality!

As far as question about depositing arms during elections is concerned, he may not deposit it during elections if he tackles the matter wisely. Various High Courts have already held that arms of only potential trouble makers are to be collected. Even the Election Commission's circular is very clear about it. It clearly says that review of only those, released on bail, having history of criminal offenses and those previously involved in rioting etc. has to be taken, out of them only, their weapons are to be got deposited. So no question of even reviewing the others or asking them to deposit any arms arises. This matter has been discussed very well in this thread at http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 45#p130560

As far as question of license renewal is concerned it should not normally be a problem, especially for a person who has "sentiments" attached. Rather he should be joining the fight for our fundamental right of RKBA so that we ultimately do not require this menace of licensing.

Anyways if he is still bent on destroying the gun, if I may say, then probably he will have to get it deactivated from arms dealer and get a certificate for the same. He will have to get the same updated in the records in office of licensing authority. But before embarking on this, I would request him to first verify and understand the entire procedure from licensing authority's mouth.

I know it is sad, but his decision is final. Has any one done this? What is the procedure? How do people keep ancient guns (which can still fire) as showpieces?

I request your expert comments.
