hi kuwar if am not wrong u can keep but not carry any knife with a blade length of more than 6 inches unless until u are in the defence forces or its a govt issued bayonet/ sword. The sword it kept would have its blade blunted by moving it on a grinder vertically. all the knives that people carry over 6 inches are actually illegal at the risk of being caught and prosecuted

But do we have any official documents to this regard.
The answer to your question is provided by Section 4 of Arms Act 1959(http://www.abhijeetsingh.com/arms/india ... r_1_2.html). It means if Central government has issued some notification to regulate arms other than firearms in your area then you need a license for non firearms else not. You can do an RTI in office of SP of your area to find out if any notification under Section 4 is in force in your area.
I see so many coconut vendor, fish selling people and so many other carrying knife having blade much more than 12 inches,
Implements of agricultural and domestic use are not considered as "arms" by Arms Act 1959.
even I have seen knife sellers on bicycle selling knife upto 18 inch openly on the roads of mumbai.
There are two aspects to this. First it needs to be seen if notification under Section 4 of Arms Act 1959 is in force in the area? Second Police is usually not very enthusiastic about enforcing this matter in regard to non firearms unless they find some opportunity to extract bribes from some well to do person.
Will there be hassel with the customs.
You can search this forum and try to communicate with those who have imported these kind of knives. Subal das is one member on this forum who seems to have lot of knives and knowledge about them, you can try sending him PM. Going by customs classification codes for knives at http://www.eximguru.com/hs-codes/82-cha ... tlery.aspx it does not appear that knives are restricted items for import. The import policy for them is "free". It appears classification code 8211 will be applicable in your case. Probably you will have to pay a certain percentage of value of your knife as import duty.

Dear Mr. Kuwar,

My advise to you about your question is that please go straight to the authorities and ask them. Because it all depends from one officer to another, this is my practical experience.

First please read the news in today's 'Times of India' Pg - 11, heading as "No Kirpan at Airports CISF tells Sikh Staff". This is an annoying news.

Now my experience with Bank Security Guard, not the private one but the police constable posted in the bank - I informed him about my revolver before entering the bank, he asked me to show the license of my weapon. I showed him the document. He said to me what would be your approx time for completing your job in the branch. My ans was 20 min. He allowed me along with my revolver.
Next visit same branch, this time a different Guard (police one), same info shared, he asked me to hand over all the ammunitions to him and allowed me with my empty revolver inside the bank.

What I am trying to convey you is that these rules are not written anywhere in any legal books, but it depends from one circumstance to another. (Or read is as Officers also).
Thanks & Regards
Pranab
