Ah so you want an HW.

Well while in India, I was with limited resources. Whatever was available had to be extracted to the maximum. The old BSA cadet was a handown. Diana 35 was borrowed. Indian made Air Rifles were never up to the mark. THe National 35 I purchased also wasn't great. It sprayed a 6 inch group at 20 yards.

In Dubai things were different. The best was available.

My mindset was that Diana is the best, so I bought the Diana 68 in 1998. It did perform very well. I also bought Diana 35 for friends and they performed quite well.

Later after 2000 during mu travels to England and meetings in Dubai with representatives from Diana in the Dubai Hunting Exhibitions I learned a lot of new things.

In England I came across magazines like Air Gun World and the Airgunner which revealed a host of information.

In IFG Mack The Knife Bana was pretty authoritive on the subject of Air Rifles, I took his opinion. This was in 2007, 9 years after buying the Diana 68 that I decided to own an AIr Rifle in .22 as well.

Remember, I had purchased a Diana 35, which I exchanged by paying an additional Dhs. 300 for the HW.

My original intention was to purchase a Diana 350 Magnum. It was not available in . 22 so I had gone for Diana 35 which was an all time classic and light to hold and easy to shoulder.

Then when I went to the store, and aided more or less by Mack The Knifes reference I picked up the HW 80.

When I had a look at it, read the manual, inspected it close and then shot with it I realised what a marvellous Air Rifle it was.

I immediately searched up my study for all those back issues of Air Gun World which I had carried back during my various trips to UK. There was a treasure trove of information on the HW. Later I realised that there was a sticker lying on my shelf for many years. I checked it was Weirauch, must have picked it up at some hunting show.

An inspection revealed superior grooving too. The Weirauch was micro grooved like my Kricko Germany .22 LR.

Then came the business end of it.

Me and Pervez went to Sharjah shooting club range. Pervez brought along his Diana 36.

We shot with both the rifles at 10m, 20 m, 25 m, and 50 m.

The HW 80 delivered enourmous power, had a better finish, shot better groups than the Diana 36. Thus I formed this new opinion that Diana is an excellent Air Rifle but a Weirauch HW is simply great.

If a choice is to be made between HW 80 and DIana 350 mag I will always go foe HW 80.

A Diana 35 / 36 too has its advantages. It is medium powered but very light and shoulders easily.

But the power delivery and hence the effective down range of the HW 80 is phenominal.

Tests is pellet traps ( Gamo ) showed how a pellet totally disintegrates flat from the HW 80. The force behind it is awesome for an AIr rifle.

Even with a . 177 you got to stay below 1000 fps for AIr Rifles, the moment you cross 1080 fps it goes supersonic and the pellet will go wayward.

Here in .22, the HW is shooting in excess of 800 - 825 fps. With a 16 grain Gamo Pro Magnum, it achieves 1/4 inch groups at 10 m and 1/2 inch at 25 m. With that kind of energy any game upto the size of a rabbit is potted for sure.

Now with such performance, power and quality how can I not love the HW ? It is my favourite although I have owned it for a very short while, and if I bring it to India I will give it to you. You can have both the air rifles, I will get more for myself.

My little boy.
You have gone bonkers. When I agreed to give it to you then why worry now ?

Winning a shooting competition depends not only on the rifle but your own mental level and physical well being on the day.

You are a good shot, I know that and perhaps you will beat me in any form of rifle shooting, be it Air Rifle, 22LR or centrefire.

I still have a 6/6 eyesight down from 6/5 when I was 23 yrs old.

The eyesight is going down now after I became Diabetic last year. Better we finish our South Africa hunting agendas and enjoy life to the full before its too late.

And if I get into serious competition shooting with you, my smoking of nearly 20 cigrettes a day is not helping my cause at all. I very well know that my hands are not as steady as they used to be.

In a shooting competition in all probability you will beat me, but you know my respect for Guns & Rifles. Why in the world would I break to pieces a lovely AIr RIfle ? I will never do such a ghastly thing. I love guns remember ?
