American SxS's - Parker (Pic's)
During all my years in India I did not come across many old American SxS. Most of the SxS's were British, Belgium or Spanish and a few German. My dad had Stevens (American) and my uncle owned a Iver Johnson. I never heard of or seen any classic American SxS like Parkers, A.H. Fox, Lefever etc.
Recently I was researching an old Parker GH made in 1899 and learned a lot about American SxS and thought I will share here on the forum.
I was going over an old 1964 American catalog and was surprised to see that when a H&H SxS double rifle cost $1250 & a Westley Richards SxS rifle cost $800, Parker Bros shotgun of America 's highest grade shotgun was valued at $1600 (production had stopped by then).
They made various grades of SxS and the lower grade were less expensive but high quality guns. Unlike many manufacturers now they had 8 or 9 frame sizes and each gauge was made on a different frame size to suit the application.
Parkers have a very dedicated following in North America. I own a lower grade Parker (grade 2, grades start at 0 and go up to 7 or 8 ), a GH model, this is a Damascus 16 gauge on a 20 gauge frame and considered comparatively rare.
Pics of my 16ga Parker on a 0 frame....nothing fancy, a plain old 112 year old gun in original condition.

Herb,
What a lovely gun you have there congratulations. Parkers are very desirable shotguns.
Interesting observation about the price, during 50’s and 60’s the British gun makers were going through a very hard time and surviving most of selling used guns at same time America was coming up big time and Parker did cash in a lot on patriotic lines like all made in U.S fine gun. If you look at used guns market the Parker A-1’s are selling for little less than British gun makers or sometimes at a similar price compared to guns of same period.

Herb,
Are the barrels damascened? I have a Westley Richards SXS with similar barrels, although the gun needs some restoration.

Bespoke - Glad you liked the gun. Interesting thing is in the same catalog a new American SxS Stevens is $50 and a Winchester 24 double for $55. Parker was already out of production for nearly 20 years by then and the prices were for old guns.
Parkers highest grade was the Invincible ( grade 9). Only 3 are reported to be produced, for many years they were considered a myth or legend but over the last few decades all the 3 have surfaced and purchased by the American millionaire Robert E. Peterson. They have a combined value of over $5 Million.
Interesting Invincible Video http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/watch?v=lQMcsqPvixA
Interesting auction video of a Parker made for Czar Nicholas II http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/watch?v=ZqLeq8geOPI. The Czar never owned the the gun as he was killed before the gun was shipped and the gun never left the shores of America.
Katana - Yes they are Damascus. Do not get the barrel blued it will ruin your gun. A separate process called browning is used for Damascus.

Thanks herb. Had a Stevens O/U in .410/.22lr. Was good as long as the .410 ammo lasted (I inherited it from my grand mum). Sold it after that since I just could not get more ammo here. It was a nice boys' gun. (I also grew up eventually)

Would have loved to passing it onto my son now, who's 11, but licensing and ammo is such a b@#$h now.

Herb,
Thanks for the videos. I have read an interesting article on Invincible’s sometime ago .They are epitome of American shotguns. Robert E Peterson “Bob” was one of the greatest best gun collectors of 20th century.
Katana,
Your Westley Richars has real damascus barrels or Faux damascus finish?

Thanks. Yes Connecticut shotgun has some amazing guns for sale, but like you said the prices are unrealistic.ngrewal wrote:herb
