Pre import approval

Post by tonysilas » Fri Feb 04, 2011 10:02 am

Hello everyone
I planned to get myself a blank pistol. I rang up fed-ex and asked them if they can handle the import of blank pistol. The lady asked me stay on hold for a while and told me that i need to get a pre import approval from the Indian customs to get it imported  . Then i provided package details with tracking num they have given for a blank pistol they shipped to hyderabad, without the pre import approval from the customs  . Then the young lady told me that the pre import approval is really mandatory.

1. I understand the term pre import approval but how to get it?

Looking forward to draw any help in this issue.

Thanks

P.s the fedex toll free num is 18002096161

ask them if a police NOC will do.
if yes -
Print out the page of the product you wish to purchase.
Go to your local police station and request them thru a written letter to issue a NOC for the product you want.

I don't think blank pistol is a "firearm" as per Arms Act 1959, hence Arms Act 1959 is not applicable. Its good that they have already shipped, I don't think it will be any problem. In my opinion the question of getting "pre import approval" from customs, NOC etc. from police does not arise since it is not covered under law, as it is not a firearm.

You could file an RTI to the customs dept asking for the procedure to import your particular blank pistol.

Use the term starter pistol instead of blank pistol. It will make your life easy

Thankyou all . I'm aware that blank/starter pistol will not fit under the fire arms category. But we cannot argue with fedex as they said its mandatory as per their norms.
I guess that the police have nothing to do with this to get an NOC. All the imports and exports will be handled by the customs.
It seems the term starter pistol may help.

BTW how to file an RTI with customs ? Can anyone shed some light on it?
