I very much doubt if the projectile would have had "carbon steel" vanes and that would be a major no no for use in a shotgun barrel. Just googled a bit and came up with the following discussion on shotgunworld:

Many an animal has fallen to the old but deadly Ball cartridge - In one of Kenneth Andersons book i remember reading that his friend killed many tigers using only 12G Ball cartridges.
I think the key for accuracy in a ball cartridge is either fire factory loads which are reputed Or if you are changing the shot then ensure that the ball is seated firmly into the cup and then the wad crimped securely.

The 12 bore with a ball was the preferred weapon of most who had to go into the jungle behind a wounded tiger or leopard, unless one owned a heavy expensive big bore double rifle.

Has anyone come across ammo made by IOF called lethal Ball.

This says lethal ball but is actually chambered for buckshot.
I was told that this was the name under which buckshot was sold when produced by IOF a few years back - not exactly sure how many years back.

I presume it is not under production any longer.
Pics if any would be appreciated.

Hi sa_ali,

On your case which was made in the USA by Western you wil not find a casewal print because they never had one.
The brass one is a very interesting case and highly collectable.

Thanks for showing the pictures.

Regards rene
I am always looking for collectable shotshells, have all required permits and would be very happy to get a PM when you can help me.
Many thanks René

Thanks for the info rene as the Western one, always intrigued me that as to how come so easily the print vanished :), even when it was present on the much older one.

The brass one, like i mentioned that was spl ball cartridge developed for the Paradox gun by Holland and Holland. It was so effective that my grand father took Indian Gaur, with single neck shot. Considering the fact that Indian Gaur, has very thick skin.

Arif: That's a mysterious one. 1. Krupp was a steel maker. Produced special barrel steels. Also produced cannon, but never rifles or shotguns. 2. It is highly unlikely that "Krupp" was producing hammer shotguns, or anything else, other than perhaps steel, in 1951. Germany was under allied occupation. Production of weapons was not allowed. 3. Most likely a product of Darra Adam Khel, NWFP. 4. There is no 5" shotgun shell. 3", and now 3.5", but no 5" (yet).
5. Pictures would help to make a positive identification.

Emeraude, Sauvestere, Federal, Wichester, Remington all make decent slug/brenekke ammunition.
Not sure is Eley manufactures 12 ga ammunition.
