Can scope be repaired?

Post by meow » Sun Jan 23, 2011 3:18 am

I got a SIMMONS 3-9X40 scope many months back but did not use it untill i got scope mounts last week. I have mounted the scope but unable to correct the cross hair. I tried either way with both the screws but the cross hair just stay put; no change. Any suggestions? I live in Chennai; so can i take it to any armory shop in Chennai? Can they or anyone fix the scope?

1.You just learned that scopes can go bad.

2.You will soon learn that they can not be repaired in India.

3.Cheap scopes that people get from Hongkong through mail and then sell for fancy prices here, are certainly going to go belly up very soon and are a waste of money.

4.Even expensive scopes will need repairs/service at some point of time or the other.

5.Cheap variables do not last on anything other than a .22 rimfire.Cheap fixed power scopes will outlast them.

6.Considering Indian situation,a fixed power scope would be the one to get.Fewer moving parts = less chance of something breaking. How about a Weaver K4 or K6? and they will probably track better than a Leupold

Considering the moderate ranges most people shoot at in India,a peep sight would be the way to go to enhance accuracy.AND they do not break.

I hope you are not expecting the cross hairs to move either ways. Modern scopes have a system where the image moves and the cross hair stay centered. If neither moves then you seem to be in trouble. Go for a quality rifle scope next time.

As mentioned, have you tried actually mounting and sighting in the scope? The cross hairs do not move, the image moves. So make sure that it actually does not work before you give up.

If it is truly jammed, you can try giving it a rap or two with a plastic hammer. Remove the scope caps, back the adjustment screw out a couple turns, then give the adjustment fitting a moderately light rap.

However, if you have not done so I would first mount it and see one more time if it will zero. Also, if this is on a springer you can try shooting a dozen or so shots to see if it jars free.
