What a sad day for me after reading this
At this rate they will kill all the tigers in next 5 to 6 years. I don't know what to say; the law enforcement is to blame partly and also the general population too who are not aware of the diverse effects they are creating. Our children will only read in the books and see some old pictures and clips of Tigers.
I hope some thing concrete is done to stop this at once.

Killing of wild animals goes unchecked in Patiala
Aman Sood
Tribune News Service
Patiala, January 5
Illegal killing of wild animals and theft of trees continues at the birs (prohibited wild life area) across Patiala. This is due to the alleged nexus of the forest department officials and smugglers on which the forest minister Tikshan Sud has promised strict action.
Wildlife smugglers have posed a risk to forest wood worth crore and wild animals in over 10 birs, spread across the length and breadth of Patiala
The forest department has done nothing to check the illegal trade as a result of which the state is losing its limited wildlife area.
Axing trees in the bir land (land covered under the Forest and Wildlife Act) is a major source of income, as several trees are smuggled out of the bir areas. On Tuesday night, smugglers trespassed into the forest land to hunt for the wild boar. “This is the best season for us, as in winters boars have a good fat cover and their meat is a rare delicacy,” claimed a hunter, accepting that he also trespasses into the bir.
Many wild animals, including blue bull, monkeys, wild boar, deer, squirrels, peacocks and numerous species of birds, inhabited the birs in Patiala.
While outsiders are prohibited in the birs. There is a notion that the offence has an unofficial approval of the forest department.
A former hunter confirmed that following the casual attitude of the forest guards posted at the birs, the smuggling of wood goes unabated. “Its easy to figure out how people carry wood everyday and store it,”he added.
A senior forest department official told The Tribune, that in May, several trees were burnt and numerous animals were charred to death following a fire. It is alleged that the fire was a handiwork of the forest department officials to cover up huge theft of forest trees from Gurdialpura Bir near Samana. A police case was registered and a probe was ordered.
Forest officials said the hunters were loaded with guns and ample ammunition. “They are well-connected people and without a search light and night vision binoculars, it is not possible to check the illegal smuggling,” they added.
Minister for Forests and Wildlife Tikshan Sud said an independent probe would be conducted and responsibility of officials would be fixed.

help me out here Bhaaion, meri Hindi bahut buri he
the last paragraph of that article says this:
"India’s official Tiger Anthem, composed by Abhishek Ray: Tiger se jungle, jungle se baarish, baarish se nadiya, nadiyo se hai haryali, tiger hai toh hum bhi hain, tum bhi ho, saare Bharat mein hai khushali (From tiger to jungle, from jungle to rain, from rain to river, from river to greenery, on the tiger depends our existence, and the greenery of India)."
I would translate "... tiger hai toh hum bhi hain, tum bhi ho, saare Bharat mein hai khushali " to
"The tiger is, so I too am, you too are, there is happiness in all india". khushali is happiness isn't it?
(where is, am, are might better be written as "exist")
or am I confusing a word I know with one I don't?

Re: Tehelka Cover Story
Man how can one feel after reading this?, only depressed. I agree with Amit 357 sympathy vote banks and all the political stunts lead us nowhere.
In the Valparai which has a good population of panthers there are often conflicts between man and cat and the politicans blame it on the cats, the most common victims are from the poromboke lands which are given to the poor people by the govt which they have been occupying illeagly in the past. To get votes from these people the ruling party gives rights of these land along with free water and electricity. Conflicts increase because these lands usually border the sholas and forests.
The govt should start a project called hunt the poacher, once a fortnight people who like shikar & trekking can volunteer as a group for patrolling the jungles in tandem with the forest dept in keeping poachers at bay. They should be allowed to carry weapons for self protection. I am sure lots of us will find this method a good way to give back to the nation.
Advantages:
Civilians will feel they have contributed a great deal to protecting the forests.
the network of poachers can be broken down
forestguards will be alert and it will be difficult to be hand in glove with the poachers
chosen civilians will be trained in handling weapons
more educated people in the scenario can increase the scope of technology for anti poaching
oppurtunity for common man to experience the indian jungles
The biggest beneficiary will be SHER KHAN
How I wish something like this happens.
reg,
drifter.
