"Elephant shot dead near Anchetti; farmer held
Staff Reporter
KRISHNAGIRI: A female elephant was allegedly shot dead by a farmer in the village Ulibenda, near Jawalagiri Reserve Forest, in Krishnagiri district on Wednesday night.
A farmer Narayanan (28) of Varadegoundan Thotti, village near Anchetti, was held by the forest officials on Thursday afternoon.
District Forest Officer A.K. Ulaganathan told The Hindu that according to the
post mortem report the elephant had haemorrhage and cavity in the brain with multiple fractures in the head.
The farmer will be produced before a local court in Denkanikottai on Friday and will be lodged in the Salem Central Prison. The muscle loading country-made gun used by the farmer was also recovered.
According to the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, the accused may be imprisoned for a minimum period of three years if the charges are proved.
To prevent the animals entering into the human habitations, the villagers along the Reserve Forest were provided with Heavy Duty Torch Lights and Crackers.Mr. Ulaganathan said that the Forest Department is taking all efforts to get compensation for the crop loss to farmers in this region.
He made an appeal to the farmers not to attack the wild animals.
The Department has also taken up initiatives to disburse compensation to the farmers for crop loss in this region. The compensation would be distributed during next week, he added."
Sad news
I wonder how powerful his "Muscle" loading country made gun was to do that kind of damage to an elephant. I thought you needed elephant guns that were used in african safaris to kill such a mammoth.

Home made bombs, used for years for this and similar purposes. News probably suppressed. Even some elephant guns cannot penetrate the brain in frontal shots. Jumbos have pretty thick forehead bones. They were used to butt down walls and gates in the olden days when elephants were used in war.
Pray for the poor pachyderm!!

Apparently the 'muscle loading' gun has not heard that.A ball from a 12 ga can do that as well.essdee1972 wrote:Even some elephant guns cannot penetrate the brain in frontal shots. Re: Elephant shot and killed by farmer
Most poaching and poaching of elephants is done using illicit muzzle loaders . A 1/2 inch mild steel rod of two inches length is charged with gun powder and match stick head phosphorus mixture and the poacher sneaks behind as close to the elephant as possible and slightly disturbs the elephant . When the elephant slightly turns a broadside, the shot is taken on the side of the temple of the animal. It is normally taken by surprise . In the shock and the poor animal is finished using a second ready armed muzzle loader. In this case it seems that it is a deliberate or a frontal defensive shot, normally taken on a charging elephant.

There are always two sides of story...facts and then what the great 4th estate of India Media chooses to sensationalize or forest guys who want a scape goat ...If there are few too many of these elephants auction the license earn money and have a better equipped guard force who can track these grand animals...
