Re: AK 47 Replica
The markets, which are considered a one-stop shop for almost everything under the sun, are selling replicas of the deadly AK-47 assault rifle and R85, which is used mainly by the UK’s Royal Marines.
The manufacturers in China have ensured that there should be no structural disparities between the fake and the original. The guns are made of steel and plastic and are not even classified as air guns because had it been the case they would have violated Rule GSR 991 Schedule II (3) of the Arms Act 1959.

Re: AK 47 Replica
I assume these would be electric or CO2 airsoft guns? Why would these "guns", which are in essence toys, firing plastic BBs, be a "hit" amongst gangsters? For the purely psychological value? I doubt being hit by even 350 plastic BBs would cause any major grief, unless "fired" at a short range at your eye or something. I thought Darra-made or Afghan-made AK copies sell in the black market for somewhat slightly more than these toys. (ref. many news items on the subject).
Legally, of course these are banned in this country. Even in US, where there are airsoft clubs and airsoft fights, they have to use a orange tip to the muzzle, to that cops don't assume you are carrying a real AK, and pump a few .45s into you. They look that real. (How a cop can recognise a small bit of orange, at some distance, in bad light, is probably best left to the lawmakers).
IMHO, something similar (but maybe not with auto mode) would be great tools to teach small kids (who will not be able to handle the recoil of a firearm or the cocking mechanism of a spring-piston airgun) the shooting discipline and safety aspects. Even paintball stuff, if easily and cheaply available, would probably serve the purpose.

Re: AK 47 Replica
From the link that Sudesh posted:
Its not a "non-civil weapon". Its a toy that shoots lightweight plastic spheres, for god's sake.
License fee for an AK47? Like most arms coming out of former Iron curtain countries, the nothing on an AK47 was ever patented and neither was the name copyrighted. Not only that it was first introduced into service in 1947. Who is this guy going to pay the license fee to?
Manufacturers are only unable to compete if they produce a shoddy or substandard product that no one wants unlike what Mr Sharma alleges.
So because some people from UP have bought these toys, they're now a huge hit with gangsters? Typical journalistic extrapolation without any proof. However, the guns that are available for Rs 12,000 (AK-47) to Rs 14,000 (R85), have found a new clientele in the small-time gangsters of Uttar Pradesh. “The guns that are operated by batteries are a huge hit in the UP market,” a dealer said.
So are replica toys really illegal in India?Girish Sharma, President of All India air gun and air pistol manufacturers and dealers, said, “The manufacturing of any non-civil weapon like AK 47 and R85 is restricted, according to the law. However all these Chinese products are smuggled into India and the authorities are clueless. The license fee for manufacturing such toys is hefty. As a result our manufacturers are unable to compete. This is denting the Indian toy industry comprehensively.”
