yes it can be done, you can use leaf spring from a track, but there is many things need to know. Best if you will buy this video and ask local blacksmith to do exactly as it shown. Methods used in this video very simple.

they teach how to make handle and sheath too

I had made a super crude 'Rambo' style knife from a old meat cleaver. The handle was a cylindrical wood piece. Blistered my fingers cutting out the knife shape with a hacksaw. The upper serrations looked like a set of bad teeth. The cleaver was old and made in 'Sheffield' so I guess the steel was excellent. Wish I had more patience and lots more skill! This was years ago. :stupid:
I have this book that's quite informative
Have not got down to making anything since but plan to in the future.

Buddy you have got me wrong. I did not make these or claim that I can make these. I got these made from a local blacksmith / knifemaker a long time back. This is just an example of what can be done locally.

I do have more locally made, in front of me, knives too.

I came up with the concept / designs and gave him the instructions but the manual work done was by the knifemaker. He was the artist who did it by hand with the help of a few basic machines.

Prasanjit, I did not actually make these as written above.

Tips: Find a guy who knows what he is doing and sit with him and explain carefully what you want to get made.

Butcher style knives are easy to make but the difficult part is a nice handle, bolsters etc and fitting these together.

You can use leaf springs or you can go to a hardware store and use some of the industrial knives / blades they sell, go to a junk yard and select some metal parts used in hard wearing applications and these can be used too. Although it will be very difficult to work with them due to the special alloys used.

Dear Sir,
Mr.Prasanjit,
If you want to go for the leaf spring then I will suggest that its the best thing to go with if you do not want to go for expensive knives or if you want this for some rough use purpose,

Because this steel is of very good quality and bears all the properties of a good steel.

These kind of steel also use to be rust proof if they are kept in good and ideal conditions.

You can find these in automotive junk yards or car / truck repair workshops. No need to buy a brand new one.
