As an older gentleman who has been in quite a few countries and packed a pistol for most of the last 42 years, the best handgun is the one that you have with you when the rear droppings from a donkey hit the ceiling oscilator. There were days that a very inexpensive .22 LR revolver from the 60's Germany was all I had. Today I've got quite the selection, but again it all boils down to what you have with youj.

Yes, I've been a soldier, engineer, intelligence officer, police man and just plain Joe.

Good point Sarge and thank you for your service.

Anyways.. we can keep on arguing.. to make this post more "useful" for majority of the members.. we need to change to post title to IOF 0.32 Revolver or IOF Ashani.. but i guess theres already a post on that one..

pistols are better than revolvers , that is a known fact
but in india with the ammo churned out by the govt factories revolvers would be a better choice

for example
once in a court one aggrieved party pulled out a pistol and placed it on the temple of the other party guy
his pistol misfired and the other guy took out his revolver by then and shot him ,killing him
and all this in front of a judge, this happened in kashipur

similarly indian ammo is more prone to jamming the pistol mechanism

another thing about revolver being popular in india is that they don't leave behind any evidence :D

Regarding the video, I think that what it best illustrates is that practice and perfecting technique is more important than anything else, such as the choice in action. Really, look at what the guy is shooting: What could be WORSE for self defense than a single action revolver in a special, low slung gunslinger's holster? Just the equipment that's suited to taking one's girl to the movies and then a restaurant afterwards...unless, of course, the movie is Quick Gun Murugan, right?

(Yes, I have that movie -- no, I haven't watched it -- yet. However, I'm not sure how willing my date (wife) is to watch it.)

I guess I'll chime in here. First, yes the revolver tends to be more reliable than the semi-automatic pistol. If a Revolver misfires, you just pull the trigger again, (if it's a double action revolver), or thumb back the hammer and try again (for SA only revolvers). If a pistol misfires, you have to cycle the slide and go again.

HOWEVER, if a revolver jams, you're in deep doo doo. Because that most like means something broke, and the cylinder is NOT going to turn. With a pistol, you cycle the slide, make sure the jammed round clears and try again. :)

I'm 54, and I've carried a handgun for work or self defense since I was 18. In the US Army, I carried a 1911, and the standard mode of carry during peace time is condition 3, empty chamber, hammer down. But there were times, I carried it in condition 1, cocked and locked. When I got out of the army, I started working security, and I started out carrying a Ruger Police Service Six in .357 magnum. But, I soon went to carrying a pistol. First I tried the S&W 59, 9mm pistol. Then I went back to my first love, the 1911, in the form of the Colt Series 70 Gov't model. I always carried that in condition 1, cocked and locked. Over the years, I've NEVER had an accidental discharge, with any of my handguns. And yes, I have dropped them once in a while, during scuffles with "bad guys" and such.

It is my considerable opinion, the firing pin lock on any pistol with an inertial firing pin is a solution in search of a problem. :)

But that's just my opinion.

I say in an ideal world carry both a semi auto and a revolver. I would take my first few shots in a situation with a revolver. I have always been a pistol fan and my favorite pistol is a Beretta 92fs .When i got my license and was looking for a handgun my father who himself owns a pistol put enough arguments in favour of a revolver and i bought his arguments and a S&W snubby. As time passed and we shot target on a few occasions his pistol has misfired due to bad ammo.. My revolver never has but even if it did i will have the next round GO BANG as soon as i squeeze the trigger . I have to admit so would the pistol after recycling the slide but hey if takes a few crucial seconds and the excercise is a lil cumbersome in a moment of emergency and panic will set in.. So i believe when u absolutely wanna go bang revolver helps.
Also one of the changes made by British Secret Service after the failed incident to kidnap Rrincess Anne was to change the official weapon of all Personal Security Officers of the Royal family from a Walther ppk to a S&W j frame revolvers. In this incident also the weapon carried by her security officer was a Walther PPK and it jammed. Another cop who showed up was also carrying a pistol and it too jammed.
Ultimately the the choice is urs and it depends on ur comfort and proficiency with the weapon......

Great thread guys.

Most of the contributors to the threads in IFg when faced by an 'anti' question are quick to fire off the statistics (mentioned in umpteen posts by different users) that most of the times just showing the gun is enough; even if fired, it needs to be fired in air etc etc.

While most of you know more than me, i still say it doesnt need a rocket scientist to figure out that a soldier, a cop, intelligence officer have needs different to a civillian.

I asked an olympic shooter which 12 bore to buy, he said everything other than a perazzi, beretta DT10, 682 were crap. Said others werent 'reliable' enough.

Asked a competitive shooter about rifles , he said remingtons were cr@#.

Yeah bob munden is a good one to follow the example of. I think ill post a pic of vincent hancock shooting his DT 10 then write "i'd like to see you do that with your greener" etc.

A professional hunter said he would not use anything but a double 500 NE.

According to our own statistics, we do agree its a one in a thousand chance one has to fire a handgun for self defence (actually less) and even if we say a 1 in 10 chance of a misfire (which is quite high) that makes a 1 in 10000 chance of a misfire.

More people are killed by lightening each year than due to handguns misfiring (not accidental firing).

So please dont give the logic of reliability. Shoot whatever you are comfortable with.
You want more gun control? Use both hands!

Yeah, an in case you dont happen to have a gun (pistol/revolver), just stick out your forefinger, thumb pointing to the sky and say bang bang. Hoping that your assailant has a decent sensahuma and joins in the laughter and back thumping with you.

pistol some times jam because people keep mags loaded all the time and spring become weak. unloading amo at evening can help to keep spring in shape longer and help to prevent stoppages.
