Re: Are Airguns Weapons????
The dictionary defines the word 'weapon' as a device designed to inflict injury or death of an opponent.
Therefore, if an airgun is used to inflict injury or death, then its definitely a weapon. But the same device used purely, specifically for sports, such as target shooting , then it cannot be labelled as a weapon. We can then concur, that the end use of the device ( in our case an airgun) determines wether it can be called a weapon.
Taking a case in point, an axe is definitely not a weapon, but when used to inflict injury or death, only then it will be called a weapon.
Finally, I would differ from the dictionary on the term 'opponent', instead of opponent, I would replace it with any living being, with locomotive abilities. The term then covers 'hunting' also, where an opponent is an animal which may not be an opponent in its literal sense, since it may be instead fleeing away from you rather than opposing you.
Very interesting connotation is it not?
Regards

Re: Are Airguns Weapons????
You are right and I Was expecting something like that - anything is a weapon if used to harm / inflict injury etc...
Guns / bows and arrows etc are used for sports but are still weapons because their primary objective is to be used as a weapon - maybe because history has portrayed it so.
In my office there is a sign with a picture of a gun and a knife on it - it has a huge red X on it and states - weapons not allowed.
I guess this topic has no absolute conclusion.
Will those who have and will vote can please put in their thoughts too.

Re: Are Airguns Weapons????
I guess general opinion is governed by two things..
a) by the primary purpose/application of the item in consideration.
b) by secondary threat perception.
In other words... things like a knife, gun, bow & arrow etc will always be considered a weapon by most, while things like a crowbar, axe, ice-pick, screwdriver etc will be considered deadly in certain situations.
As far as a killing 'implement' is concerned - even our SARI can be considered dangerous - one can use it to throttle someone.

Re: Are Airguns Weapons????
In the Indian context, the definition is relatively clear. It fails the Deel Wood test,it requires a license. In the eyes of law,it becomes a weapon. And,India is not unique in this regard. In UK, if an air rifle exceeds the 12F/lb power limit, it requires a Firearms Certificate. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Then why bother setting up a vote ? A vote is when you have a clear choice to make not when you are confused.
I dont think an airgun is a weapon. I believe its an exquisitely crafted, precision tool for enjoying a recreational sport.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Dear friends
My request is not to run this thread any more, since already lot of people who are against air weapons are trying to get licence imposed on keeping air weapons.
By any means they are trying to convince judiciary and executive to get licence requirement for air guns.
Best wishes

It might not have a conclusion but will give a good idea of what the majority considers it as.

Re: Are Airguns Weapons????
in that question, I would add some good amount of healthy hypocrisy.
I think air guns is mostly like a toy guns, how toys can be a weapon. it is in fact not much different of those water guns used during Holi.
thinking of air guns as a weapons it is possible to end up considering anything as weapon. for example stone can be a weapon too, same time it is oldest construction material.
Because air guns does not meant to be a weapon, but only recreational and sport items - it is not a weapon.

Re: Are Airguns Weapons????
Well according to me air guns were not weapons till some time back but since there have been technological advancements in this category and gradually these airguns are crawling into magnum class so we can consider them as weapons. They are becoming lethal day by day. So it wont be wrong to tag them as weapons anymore.
If judiciary had been so involved into IFG that they may consider this thread as a big proof to categorize air guns as weapons and impose license for it , then I think there have been so many people pleading to open import of weapons which would have been done far ago. But nobody is here to listen to us from the government side. My torn credit card at close range is the deadliest, Yes air gun is a weapon upto @ 70mtrs if used upon humans!
Also just before & after WW1 air guns were used for Assassinations. It all depends on your needs, What you want to do with it.
