Lubrication for Airguns

Post by essdee1972 » Tue Oct 12, 2010 3:23 pm

I have a .22 Kolkata made air rifle - break barrel, springer, one month old. Can I use normal machine oil (used for sewing machines, etc.). as advised by the retailer? Is it advisable to use WD40 inside the barrel / spring / moving parts?
Cheers!

You can use it!!WD40 isn't exactly a lubricant, for cleaning and general maintanence it can be used.Do a search on the forum you'll find all the required info.

Thanks, Rohan!

I actually get quite some smoke with WD40, provoking questions like "yeh airgun hai ki asli hai?" :D

Sewing machine oil (which has a picture of a gun on top of it, as a sort of "common use" samples) does not give so much smoke.

WD40 is not a lubricant, It is used for removing rust.

Right, Chucky, normally I use it for rust removal only. But I also go by the "2000+ uses" in the WD40 website, and have used for lubrication in many situations. But am still scared to use it in fast moving parts like an airgun. I think a lot of dieseling takes place, hence the smoke. Won't be great for the parts, I believe.

(as an aside, I find Rustoleum's Rust removal paste (basically hydrofluoric acid) best for non-sensitive stuff, wouldn't dream of using it in the gun, though).

Thanks,

And Cheers!!

wd40= water dispersant 40. It is not a lubricant as explained above. There is another thread here explaining how to look after your air rifle. Please go through that . I am sure all your doubts will be answered in there.
