Very impressive performance Mehul,
For an 1870's straightwall, its going places-the kudu and sable in the link are , well, trophies!

If you go in for a remingtonski in 45-70, I'm sure we'll see many posts on the performance.

Asif,

If you go to the second and third pages you would see that the man shot Hippo, Lion, Elephant etc as well with the 45-70 though I would be the first to agree with experts who say that this doesn't mean a thing. Should be a fun little rifle once it launches here. I shall certainly buy one and probably hunt pigs with it.

Cheers!

Mehul. I think that you`re going to have a long wait because, as I said, it looks like Remington have abandoned any idea of importing the rifle - it doesn`t appear on their website or in the 2007 catalogue. I suppose that it would make an adequate piggy rifle......but the 9.3x74R is ( a lot ) better !

Grumpy,

Whenever it is launched, they'll be able to sell me one. I would much rather that Remington drop it and Baikal market it themselves - it would be considerably cheaper if that happened. :)

I'm never going to stop buying guns if I can help it. This would be one more addition to my little collection of shooters.

Cheers!

Stopped at largest gun shop in town yesterday, more than 5000 guns in stock.

Remington Double is a no show, never had it and do not expect to get it.

Discussed options of a old time type rifle with sales manager.

Gave me the following two:

On the cheap, buy a Ruger No 1 Falling block with open sights and replace rear sight with Express sights. Get some engravings done by a local person for peanuts, reblue in deep black and give a coat of Minwax to make stock look antique. Ruger 1 are available for $750 new or around $500 from private party. Gun can be had in .458 or .375 and use underpowered loads for shooting and hunting. With full power loads a person could enjoy the once a while big bore kick in the shoulder recoil.

Option2:
Buy a used Heym Double rifle for real money or a Drilling(3 Barrel gun) if going the cheap route. Heym rifles were imported from Europe till the 80's. Though they list for a lot in the Gun trader book of values, actual private party sale prices are much lower. Cheapest and best would be a SXS in 16 gauge with a mid powered cartidge for the third rifle barrel, possible to get gun under $ 3000 in excellent condition. Most expensive would be heavy bore SXS or O/U rifle with express sights and the works for $5000+ or so. There are other options too such as Over shotgun with Rifle Under barrel, etc. California being full of well heeled retirees, quite a few of these guns abound, just have to start looking at my gun club.

I think I will buy both. A single shot falling block Ruger in .375 H&H or .458 winchester and a Drilling in 16X16 Bore with a mid range European caliber Under barrel. With the drilling I can hunt quail with the top barrels and use slugs in top barrels upto 60 yards for Boar and Deer. For long range shots to 125 yards I can use the lower rifle barrel.

The single shot can be my range shooter/hunter with reduced power handloads around 3000FP muzzle energy. Occasionally I will break my shoulder with full power rounds on the range to get the big bore feel.

Satpal

PS: In the late 80's I owned a Ruger 77 magazine rifle in .458 Winchester Mag. The gun kicked like a mule with 500 grain bullet full power loads, once shot 16 rounds, had a very bad shoulder/lower back for 2 weeks. Yet with reduced power 300 grain bullet handloads the heavy gun was a pleasure to shoot all day.

Got this reply from Remington on their Baikal Artemida double:

Response (Gloria) - 01/30/2007 02:30 PM
Dear Mehul,

We continue to work on the SPR22 double rifle in both 30-06 and 45-70. We do hope to offer these, but until such time that guns are ready we will no longer actively advertise or market this model. We sincerely hope to offer SPR22 rifles in 2007. Thank you for your understanding and continued interest in this outstanding model.

Does look like the rifle is on course to be sold this year. If they do offer it, it would be from the St Louis NRA Convention onwards this April.

Betcha it won`t be available in two or three months then Mehul - the rifle has featured in their online and actual catalogues for two-years without appearing. This year they have dropped any mention of it which suggests that whatever they say they are not anticipating deliveries in the near future.
I wonder if Vikram will notice this thread ? We`re talking about the same gun in two different threads and he obviously hasn`t noticed this one.

The good news, Remington is apparently again listing the 221 double rifle, hope they actually become available this time. At least wholesalers are listing it again, though not yet in stock. Don't really know where the problem lies, but other importers of Russian guns I have talked to claim that supplies tend to be sporadic, with little concurrent production of different types and calibers. Remington has limited the selection, but off and on the shotguns and combinations are availble. Cheers.

The Rem-Spartan line of shot guns are basically Baikal only diff being that in Russia the models are a part of the IZH series, while in the US it is SPR .The Baikal DR or combo guns are available in Canada.

The first of the Remington imported .45/70 double rifles are finally beginning to be offered for sale here in the USA. The price is close to $1000 rather than the $600 initially projected. I have seen no performance reports yet.

The Remington (Russian) double finally became available here late last summer, in limited numbers. They went fast, took me four orders to the distributor to get one. Barrels are adjustable, though no instructions, or bullet weight it has been sighted-in with, if indeed it has. Nothing to be proud of, terrible trigger pull. Also has a dovetail for a scope mount. Once spring gets here in May, I'll play with it and report. The old .45-70 is still a good and potent cartridge for heavy game at short range when handloaded, and is certainly a better cartridge for a double rifle than any rimless cartridge. The 9.3x74R would be a much better chambering, but Remington isn't importing that one. The O/U Izh 94 has been more readily available, though also sporadically.
To the question whether a scope can be fitted to a double, it certainly can. But shot through the scope the second barrel will no longer shoot to the same point as the first barrel, regulation will be off, unless the two barrels are only joined at the breech, and not full length. Cheers.
P.S. And the MSRP is now close to $1,200. no longer $750.

Why is the 45-70 such a popular cartridge in US?
Because it is very versatile. Those interested in black powder can shoot it in the manner for which it was designed. Cast bullets work well (although some Marlins with microgroove rifling can be troublesome). The recoil isn't too severe. On the other hand, the .45-70 can be loaded up to a considerable extent. The bullets used for .458 Win Magnum can be used, which means that having something stout enough to do whatever job is no problem.

53 grains of IMR 3031 is worth about 1800 fps and that's around 2500 ft-lbs.

I will confess that I've shot these loads a bit in a M1895 Marlin. This is a very lightweight, handy rifle. If you subscribe to the notion that you carry a rifle more than you shoot it, so recoil doesn't matter, then this is a good hunting choice. However, it is murderous to shoot from the bench! In a normal weight rifle, it would be quite reasonable for most anything within its range, I think.

As has been said, even stronger loads are possible in modern rifles like bolt and strong single shot actions.
