Err, actually only one will do, but his diet is more liquid than solid.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
In all probabilities what Don is referring to as a FOX could be JACKALS. It is highly illegal to hunt or kill them as well. Well trained pack of Pariah dogs, a local breed too will rid you of this problem to a great extend. These dogs don't need any special diet like other exotic breeds and have a great ability to survive in the toughest of environment. Just MHO.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Are you talking of foxes robbing fishnets/traps set up to harvest fish or are you saying that foxes get into your pond and catch fish?
The latter seems quite far fetched ,an occasional fish in the shallows yes but enough to cause 30% loss seems highly unlikely.Unless of course there otter X foxes running round in your neck of the woods
Regards,
Yaj.
PS:Are your ponds in the Kolleru lake vicinity?

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Yap,
Thanks Naga and thomast
Raj,
No our ponds are not located at kolleru, it is located in Krishna dist and near by Avanigadda. In ponds we usually input seeds(baby fishes) as 10000 per acre ( ponds are accompanied with airatiors for oxygen for the fishes) normally as the fishes are small usually the problems with birds, which can be decreased using nets. Nets means not for hunting and it dont cover the pond, we keep some big and high nets and seeing those nets birds feel fear and dont come down to ponds. But after 3 to 4 months of seeding the problem will starts with foxes.
The foxes enters into ponds and kill fishes and eat them. And let me tell u damage is not 30% the yield is coming 30% means damage is 70%. Usually we calculate the yield as 25% less to the original seeding, means if seed 10k we calculate as 7.5 is the seeding and we are getting the yield is almost ( with out any deceases )2.5k, Almost all the problems are solved instead of this foxes
Don
Thanks Naga and thomast

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
don and brothers, pls correct me if i am wrong, if foxes like fishes ..wont the dogs like them? just as pet dogs in the house may have the habit of chewing up things and food lying around, with fish in the pond will that really solve the issue? i m still not clear.
i m not an expert on this but you can see if this suggestion works, the foxes might be frequenting in the night as they r mostly nocturnal. One thing is a good level of fencing around which is high enough. Another what comes to my mind is, get speakers installed and a recording of gun shots playing at some intervals or get scarecrows with flashing lights and sound at the main points around the pond.
again, as i said this just occoured to me, i m not an expert on such issues. just my 2 pennies !

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Then a few strategically placed solar lights which work for 8-12 hrs and are quite reasonable in cost should do the trick.don wrote:Hi,

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Assuming that the foxes being referred to here are jackals, I'd like to share an incident which I witnessed in a village in Tamilnadu. The owner of a poultry farm had a couple of stray dogs which he fed to keep jackals at bay. Around 11 pm, a jackal strayed into the farm. Initially, the dogs started barking ferociously. But the jackal, known for its cunningness, inched towards the pack with its ears folded and tail between its hind legs ---- the mannerisms of a dog. The farm owner asked us to keep still and watch how the animal tricked the dogs. Within a couple of minutes, the jackal was seen frolicking with the dogs, which were tricked into believing that it was one among them!! Slowly, the jackal managed to 'whisk away' one of the dogs out of the farm boundary. A little far stood 2 more jackals. After a while, the dog vanished with the jackals only to be seen dead in a nearby field the next morning.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
great !! and by the way i also manages to go read this :
http://www.urbanwildliferescue.org/huma ... s.htm#dogs
FOXES TEASING DOGS [top]
Keep your dog in the house or garage at night and in the early morning for a few days. The fox will lose interest and will leave.
Foxes seem to have quite a sense of humor. They might enjoy watching your dog running back and forth and barking.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
But dear friends how are we going to save the fish from dogs?thomast1 wrote:dogs are very nice idea, and you want a cost effective option?? go for the mongrels. the dogs that you see around in your place, pick them up young. may be half a dozen, invest 2 months training them in the farm... invest=effort and time..
they are aggrssive, show pack behaviour and can ward of foxes. i hope you mean the real fox because in general we call all these guys fox, but there are wild dogs, red tailed dogs, fox and wolf that are common in our forest. Domestic dogs (a pack of them) are good against fox and red tailed dogs.
and for food and vaccination, meat is not a daily requirement, when young feed them bones, i am sure beef and pork bones will find its way to you for almost no price from butchers. vaccination for rabies will hold good for an year, and the local veterinary doctor (Govt) can administer them at low cost.
and one more thing, you dont want dogs to be the next issue, so neuter /spay them once they are 4 -5 months..
