I have a rifle club membership & if I give an authorization latter to my friend for carrying .177 air rifle behalf of me & for me while he is coming back to India from US.

Will the mumbai custom officer allow him to carry air rifle behalf of me without charging any duty?

Sorry if this question is ask previously

I will be very interested in the answer myself! (.. But am afraid all the ones I have heard so far were 'NO'.)

Can a person not be considered a 'courier' in the true sense?!?

My Lp 10 came via post. But all I am trying to say is that even when you have all the papers , they make it a pain. Now I am not accusing the man of corruption, he just wanted to insure that I somehow paid duty on the pistol. I went three to four times. I frankly didn't know what else I could do but keep turning up with the right paper work.
Maybe I could have asked him to give it to me in writing, because the first customs supervisor loudly insisted that they don't consider the rifle club membership either. So if one had the time then one could keep playing the game but I didn't have the time nor the patience to threaten them with the RTI or a call to their superiors.
I summation all that I would like to say is you choose how much you want to dance, they have all the time and the inclination to do nothing but play with you.

yeah maybe i should have. the man is so ornery that he tore up a renowned shots application to import pellets. this is straight away a contradiction of the law. but the good part is that this time he has bitten off more than he can chew. my good friend shall be making him chew a few crow pretty soon. i am just heating the popcorn in anticipation.

highly informative.... Thank you all

I am in US now and thanks to the thread i want to get a air pistol when coming back , any recommendations ? I would not want something costly which would break my heart if I have to let go at customs or the duty does not bear to large a hole ..

You need to go to a store and see what you are comfortable with. Decide if you want a CO2 or a Springer. If a Springer, buy a Crosman 1377. At $60, I don't think anything else comes cheaper than that. Plethora of choices if you decide on a CO2.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

I can suggest that you:

i. phone the particular airline's customer service to ask what their policy is
ii. also e mail them with the same question, so you get a written reply.

doing the above is much better than relying on hearsay and chinese whispers. if your chosen airline declines airguns, move to another one!
