Airgun import experiences - via personal baggage route

What about in dubai airport? How do they handle the custom clearance issue? Do we need to inform the custom officers well in advance or we can just let them know on the day of departure?

Does that depend on the airline we travel too? Which airline is flexible when it comes to air rifles?

Emirates is most flexible. You need to tell them in advance that you will carry an airgun and be sure to reach well in advance. Make sure u pack it in a hard gun case.

never try to carry a airgun in chennai airport ,its a great head ache personally i have seen my friends stuck in airport and got the gun released after 6months with 100% duty .he is so so lucky in this turn.....still many airrifle are lying with dust .....

follow the rules nash. be a rifle club member, get a sub 12 foot pound .177 air rifle, be polite and stop trying to beat the system.

Dev , when did it become a mandatory requirement to have Rifle Club Membership to bring .177 Cal Airgun/rifle in personal baggage ? As per my knowledge anyone can bring airgun/rifle of .177 Caliber in personal baggage after paying 35% duty. Has anything changed in between or I am missing a point here .. ?

Sapta you know how the customs can be. I have a registered shooter's card from the NRAI. The postal commissioner didn't let my kosher .177 lp 10 out till I got him a written letter from the Delhi State stating that I am a registered shooter. So if you want to play with the boys in white it's your call. I wouldn't put it past them to mess up your morning.

What do you think the deal wood test is about sir? It is a crude version were anything shooting above 600 fps with a 15.4 grain pellet will fail. So it will be a safe rule of thumb IMHO to bring an air rifle in.

Thats the precise reason we are in this mess, don't you think Postal commissioner was unfair as well as breaking the law by asking you about a letter while you were having a NRAI membership proof? It is not mentioned anywhere in notification that you need a letter from club. These babu's keep making rules and we keep following them.

Dev, I am confused now , how come the postal commissioner comes into picture in the personal baggage route ? Did you bring your LP 10 through courier ? or in flight with you ?

BTW Per Website Air India will not allow any gun Even as a Checked in Baggage Probably they think them extra ordinary or they just forgot we won the only individual Olympic gold and One silver only from Shooting so far.

Hi Kanwar and Sapta,

My Lp 10 came via post. But all I am trying to say is that even when you have all the papers , they make it a pain. Now I am not accusing the man of corruption, he just wanted to insure that I somehow paid duty on the pistol. I went three to four times. I frankly didn't know what else I could do but keep turning up with the right paper work.
Maybe I could have asked him to give it to me in writing, because the first customs supervisor loudly insisted that they don't consider the rifle club membership either. So if one had the time then one could keep playing the game but I didn't have the time nor the patience to threaten them with the RTI or a call to their superiors.
I summation all that I would like to say is you choose how much you want to dance, they have all the time and the inclination to do nothing but play with you.

I have one query

I have a rifle club membership & if I give an authorization latter to my friend for carrying .177 air rifle behalf of me & for me while he is coming back to India from US.

Will the mumbai custom officer allow him to carry air rifle behalf of me without charging any duty?
