First time at range

Well after lot of encouragement from board members namely Grumpy and Mehul. Finally made to a range near New York City, a place called "Thunder Mountain" and believe me its located on top of a mountain in the NJ State Ringwood park next to two huge lakes. Its about 40 miles from Manhattan and traffic was fine so made in decent time, got lost in the park, reminded me of "Blair Wood project " movie ( different story) but cell phone saved me.

These guys also sell guns so he gave me a Citori o/u and Beretta Semiauto A 391 and two boxes of shells. The lady puller assigned to me was nice, told her its first time ever. She took me to "bunny" range for beginners. I told her last time when I was on a bunny slope learning how to ski, I hit the only pole on a slope and all 5 years olds were giving me tips..

She corrected my stance and my first round score was 15/25 with Citori. Next she told me try closing one eye I was 24/25 with beretta. Recoil wasnt that bad and felt same for both the guns.

Now I will try other ranges and maybe Skeet or trap. All the shooting cost me $28 plus tips and I did better than ski trip..Its the distance and traffic from NYC that can be an issue..

Thanks Guys. Again remember all of the clays were coming out at same angle so as long as gun was stable and with minimal swing..

Inder

Bunny is means for beginners, slope with least gradient and same kind of goes for the trap and clays I was shooting.

Well Veerrji looking forward to reading your "Ramta" triology first time at range, Gander mountain etc.. So I jumped in started something..
I hope you have heard Ramta songs??

Ngrewal,

It's a good beginning.Don't let a small matter like distance deter you.I am thinking of taking up ISSF big bore rifle shooting and the nearest range I can practise at , is at Phillaur. It's about 2 and 1/2 hours from where I am now and I will have to pass through Ludhiana to get there.

Mehul, I am not sleeping with the enemy, just the means to an end  I am looking at easier options and will take this up only if all else fails.

penpusher,

I am pretty sure you need to be a state rifle association or NRAI member to participate, though I could be wrong.

You may not have any options, other than that between the devil and the deep blue sea. ;)

Thanks this place is something reminded me of driving in morni hills near chandigarh.
Have you checked out Sector 25 shooting range in Chandigarh? We used to practice with 7.62 there and also at Military range at Chandi mandir. Then I did see signs for a new range at Mohali. Not sure whether Punjab and Chandigarh shooting assoc have split.

Thats quite a ride to Phillaur on a good day minus traffic.

All the best

Navdeep,

Welcome to shotgunning! I can see that we have one more natural shot in our group and certainly one more addict in the making! There is no fix for this addiction except shooting as much and as often as possible and enjoying yourself more and more!

I hope you're going to be able to make it here for the 16th - let me know where to come and pick you up and I shall be most glad to do the needful. I know that it is going to be a great pleasure to meet one more IFG member in person and enjoy shooting with him.

Welcome to shotgunning again, my friend,

Mehul

Navdeep,

This is really sad. Anyway, it means that we shall have yet another get together in the future.

Well my second time at range went for Skeet. The scores validate that one needs lot of practice and poise to shoot skeet. My scores 7, 8 and 12. Guns used Beretta o/u 686 Oynx and Browning Field gun. The former gun I nearly bought ( used gun) but a fellow shooter who was owner of the gun had a change of heart. Also saw $5000 Kreighoff.

I guess lot of practice ahead..
