Academy has advised to buy a kit and gun for my kid. Hesitating since they are expensive. Together costing me over Rupee 4lacs. Wanted to seek advice and guidance from this forum since (1) I am unsure if the kid would continue with it in the long term and (2) if there is an actual potential or the academy is just pushing to make money. Background: My kid 13 years wanted to try shooting. Took her to an academy where she tried rifle and pistol for 2 days and she decided on rifle. She is headstrong in some things. The academy got her to shoot the rifle in a sitting position for a few days. Then the pre state was coming up. So, they asked her to practice shooting while standing. With a total of 8 days of shooting (5 days sitting and 3 days standing) we went for the pre state. She managed to score 327 (out of 400, 40 shots) where the qualifying score was 285. She has been practicing post that and was able to improve her score shooting between 360 to 370 in 2 weeks but is stuck there for over 3 weeks now. Academy mentioned that she should now go for a kit and rifle and that she has potential to do well. She is using a hand me down kit that the academy arranged for her but it is a liitle big for her and also a basic gun that the academy provided her. Wanted to understand if the advice sounds right and if her scores actually indicate potential. Should I go ahead and make the purchase?

If my daughter was this good. Wild horses couldn't keep me from pushing her forward with a spanking new Anschutz. Seriously your daughter is going to wear the flag on her shooting jacket one day. Don't hesitate anymore.

Scoring 360-370 out of 400 in two weeks is outstanding, that without a proper gear and gun. Remember me when she wins Olympic gold. I wish her all the best.

Thank you for the guidance and the wishes. Have gone ahead with the purchase. Hopefully she will continue to practice and build on her strength. The coach is worried about her muscle and back strength. She is a very thin girl. But she does seem intent on putting on some muscle to move forward. She is enjoying the sport. The state championships are in about a month's time.

From Zero to 370 and that too within 2 months !!!! and you are unsure about purchasing ? Trust me , many takes more than a year with latest Rifle and Jacket and still not be able to achieve that. Your daughter certainly has potentials and yes a proper rifle customized to her height , length of pull and stance will surely improve her score significantly , however it may take some time to get adjusted with new rifle , but she will improve without a doubt

We got the steyr challenge e through the academy. The coach has been experimenting and setting it up to her liking. It's been interesting to say the least. The new kit is also here. But taking time to break it in. Thank you for the positive messages and guidance

She just gave her state competition. Almost didn't attend since she had fever but she was adamant. Scored 375 out of 400. Thanks to the forum members for the encouragement. Seeking advise on one question since her coach is also not totally sure on this one. She has astigmatism and tried a monoframe fixed on the rifle but it was too painful and difficult so she is currently playing with her specs. Can you play with contact lens and does anyone in the forum know if contact lens is suitable for shooting? Thanks
