Tejaswini Sawant on Sunday became the first Indian woman shooter to win a gold medal in the World Championships when she shot a 597 in the 50 mt rifle prone event to strike gold at Munich.

The 29-year-old gold medallist was level with Poland's Ewa Joanna Nowakowska in the final score but managed to clinch the top honours with a better perfect score tally.

Kazakhstan's Olga Dovgun settled for the bronze with a score of 596.

Sawant shot a score of 597 (100,100,100,99,99,99), equalling the 1998 record set by Marina Bobkova of Russia.

This is not an Olympic event but Tejaswini's achievement comes as a great morale booster for all athletes ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

In 2006, she won gold medals in Women's 10m Air Rifle singles and Women's 10m Air Rifle Pairs events at the Commonwealth Games at Melbourne.

Sawant had earlier won a bronze medal 50 metre rifle three positions at the 2009 ISSF World Cup at the same venue.

4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

It is an honour for me to know the lady, I have always been impressed by her simplicity and dignified approach to the world at large, despite her performances. She is now an Asst. Director with the Dept. of Sports Govt. of Maharashtra. She looks after the Balewadi shooting range.

Do convey the regards and heartfelt congratulations from the IFG family when you meet her next time.
