Re: Tips on Pistol Shooting
Hi HVJI and Jitu,
The hard work part is something I need to understand is there a threshold that one must cross before the 90's are hit? My friend who succeeded and shot one of his best scores in the GVMN-372/400, practiced twice a day. He would routinely shoot sixty pellets in the morning and another sixty in the evening. And I guess as he was deadly serious he must have spent another hour doing holding exercises. From his routine it seems like this must be what is required for further glory.
Your comments please.
Regards,
Dev

Re: Tips on Pistol Shooting
"aaThwaa aaThwaa" (pun intended) - Can someone please clarify the Figure 8 exercise for me - or is it too early for me to get into it ?airgun_novice wrote:Got it, Biju - had missed it during the reading - probably groggy reading late into the night. Thanks.
<<"This exercise must be done a minimum of 60 repetitions per day. In sets of 5 reps (trace the fig 8 as slowly as possible, both clockwise and anti-clockwise, rest for a few seconds, then repeat four more times) ". >>
BTW a stupid Q on "8" - Is the 8 to be traced with -> ?
1. straightened hand (shoulder dominant motion)
2. folded hand (elbow dominant motion)
3. wrist (like flicking of dand patta (urumi))
Competitions are far off for me; I am currently a starter in both. Dilli door hai - abhi galli mein hoon. . When I get up to decent progress mark will surely seek periodic expert evaluation on the path to proceed further from the fork. Or do I have to make a choice right now, at start itself ? Meanwhile all the tips would be a great help. Thank you once again.

Re: Tips on Pistol Shooting
1. High volume does not Guarantee a proportional level increase in performance, until unless it is coupled with good coaching. It is the role of the coach to identify and suggest remedial measures for correcting errors. In the absence of the coach, the shooter, who being a novice, will find it incredibily difficult to CORRECTLY identify precisely where he is going wrong. left to his own devices, he has to try by trial and error basis, which is extremely time consuming and can be outright demoralising at most times.
2. Without coaching, the shooter however high his volume, will continue to REPEAT his mistakes/errors, with higher volume his performance will nose dive.
3. Hence a good coach will save you time and grief. And I mean, the coach who is sitting behind you when you are practising. Not the one tapping away on a computer since he will be as blind as a bat, with no visual feedback.
Regarding fig. 8.1. It is recommended that the wrist and elbow is locked at the starting position- which is with the pistol loaded and resting on the shooting bench, with its butt touching the surface.
2. The motion that takes place is very much like the railway signal, as the shootier raises his arm to take aim. After the shot, the same lock (elbow and wrist) is maintained while bringing the pistol down to rest. Again like the railway signal.[/quote]

Re: Tips on Pistol Shooting
Thank you hvj1, for clarification on Figure 8 exercise. For the lack of your train signal example, I was going around in ...well, Figure 8 all the way!

Hello Lucky,
By the way, almost all pistol shooters start of as air rifle shooters, including yours truly. There is absolutely no problem in taking up pistol shooting.

Re: Tips on Pistol Shooting
Started getting cramps and aches now. Right side of the neck-shoulder junction (am a right-hander) and 8" above the 'tail bone' and 3" distance from the spine to the left side in the back. Should I take a break and work on strengthening back and waist line muscles? Though 6'1" - I have a well-endowed paunch. Should I go in additionally for Surya Namaskaar type stretches at home or weights in a gym ? I have been taking 3 km walk (once) at least 3 days/ wk and of course the train signal fig 8 exercise (since last 7-10 days) in addition to some free-hand drills. Do have an old lower back problem resulting out of long hours of continuous driving (not much now) and a nasty accident in 1998 - so am reluctant to get into weights - but the weight has absolutely no reluctance getting into me !!! Jokes apart, should weights (light, I suppose) training be started immediately or should I wait some more time ? Any advice is highly welcome and thank you very much in advance for the same.
Confession:=> Still to get *fully* on hvj1's suggested regimen.
Resolution:=> Hopefully, should become somewhat fitter to get on it totally by Jan 2011 end.

Hey Gunmaster, Sifu,
When they say that you will get the trigger,
And you get the trigger,
Does it stay,
Or runs away to play.
So master please to answer.
