carrying pellets in checked baggage on domestic flights

Any tips on carrying .177 pellets in checked baggage on domestic flights ? Want to carry some from Delhi to Mumbai. I cannot choose what airline I will travel on but likely to be AirIndia (IC) , Jetlite or Spicejet.

Pellets should not be a problem, international airlines don't seem to care about pellets so I imagine domestic one's should not either.

However to be on the safer side, go to their (the airline's) website and get the contact info of their dangerous goods dept. Send them an e-mail requesting information on restrictions/ formalities (if any) regarding carrying pellets in checked in baggage. If they respond, well and good, else take a print out of the e-mail and carry it with you and try to arrive at the airport early, just in case some formalities need to be taken care of.

Last time I checked in at the raipur airport with a thousand air rifle pellets in the pouch of my rucksack the itb guys asked me what it was and I replied ammunition , so they said take it out and I did so ,then they said arre yah to phugga phorne wala hai and let it go at that

The CISF guys at Delhi may not be so obliging. I checked on airlines websites. IC says NO WAY, Spice and Jetlite say we might.

As usual great clarity on what you can not do but nothing definite on what you can.

How do target air rifle shooters go about when they go places for competitions ? they carry air rifles / air pistols and the pellets as well.

I carried airguns and pellets many times without any problem whatso ever in almost all of the airlines (Barring once when dhakkan airlines guys forgot to offload it in Delhi and it went to Mumbai).

Simple procedure of carry a airgun is:

*. Tell security guy at the gate that you are carrying a gun.
*. He will ask somebody to accompany you to airline counter, Sometime airline staff will ask you to fill a form or they will redirect you to security where you ahve to fill a form.
*. There you will be asked serial number of the gun, ammunition quantity, license detail etc. Tell them its not a firearm and you don't require license.
*. They wil take the form and gun from you and will hand it over to you at the destination.

I am assuming it will be same for pellets, the only problem is sometime they insist on counting the pellets. Ask them to do it while you have a beer

Dear all, On domestic flights -

Q1. The AP pellets must be carried in checked luggage and can *not* be in cabin hand-piece. Is my understanding correct ?
Q2. What if it's a short trip and I am carrying only hand-held luggage ? Has anyone faced such a scenario ?

Wrt Q2. -> I am flying say from Lucknow to Mumbai and managed to make an earlier detour to Meerut and purchase say 50 tins from Mastershot. So in effect I am not carrying my AP but returning with only the pellets.

What inder has said is pretty much it. Read the notice this time for Spice Jet. you can carry it in your baggage but you must inform them. Best would be to also have them in a separate lockable container. That way you can also give it to them to carry in their dangerous goods container. (This bit is my theory, since it was the procedure for carrying air pistols last time.)
