I am heading back to India soon and want to take a couple of knives along, nothing too large, the biggest being a 5" fixed blade. However I would like to know if there could be any problems I might encounter as I am entring the country on a tourist visa. Thanks.

Should not be a problem as long as there are only a couple of them.

Are there any restrictions on bringing any kind of knife in India like those tactical fixed blade or folding knifes. I know in US civilians ( other than oregon residents ) cannot buy automatic opening knifes unless they are emergency responders.

Most knives in the checked in luggage are not of concern, unless they exceed a blade of 8 inches - as per what I was told an year back.
Although, if the 8 inch blade is part of a culinary set, it is often ignored, as in my case. I think I bought back about 12 knives in all - a set of two ceramic 5 inch cutters, a set of two steel bread knives, a set of two peelers and a set of 6 blades, which was part of a kitchen set, the biggest being 8.5 inches of steel blade :)

Thanks for the input. I will provide an update of how things go once I get back to India.
