The law permits the authorities to check for an arms license. So if you are caught with a photocopy (not Xerox) of your license.. dont worry you wont be arrested under TADA or POTA.. but they certainly can detain you till the original is produced. I think they can confiscate the gun too, and release it later (maybe with a warning)

again...discretion of the babu matters!!!

I also think that a photocopy attested by any Gazetted officer / Sub-registrar / judge /SI and above rank, will do...

Hi colthead,
You would be aware that, generally only the original document is valid for things like purchase of ammunition, transfer of firearms, renewal etc. The thing about carrying a copy, even an attested one may not be acceptable as proof of legal ownership by the authotities.

A question like, why are you not carrying the original may be asked. The point is, some may accept it, but if someone wants to give you a hard time they can.

The Arms Law mentions that a reasonable amount of time must be given to produce the license, however the burden of proof lies on you and the quicker you can produce it, the less time you are under suspicion.

I had my license hard bound and the cover takes all the beating, once it wears out all I have to do is have it re-bound. Also that is a good time to have extra white pages added to the license.

Anand

Colthead,
As long as one carries one's pistol within the city of its issue, I guess it is alright to keep a copy of a license. One can produce it within hours on demand if asked for. It's not advisable otherwise.

Adding extra blank pages to an original arms license is a strict no no, at least for the licenses that have been issued by the C.O.P. Greater Mumbai, which please note. One can always apply for a new book in case one exhausts all the pages. If you havbe them already in the book, please try to have them stamped with the concerned authority.

we do have to carry the orignal booklet ,photocopy will not do.only if you have deposited in the lic. authority office(in Up it is issued by collectorate - OC Arms) for any kind of endorsement then they will give you a stamped photocopy for the time being.

Marksman,
Once the pages are exhausted in the license booklet, the arms clerk advises us to add pages, then, each time an endorsement is made on a page the DCP's stamp is placed along with his signature.

Marksman you wrote: " If you havbe them already in the book, please try to have them stamped with the concerned authority.

I did not understand that part, what stamp are you refering to? Can you elaborate?
Thanks,
Anand

Anand,
Have one of the original pages in the License book endorsed stating that certain number of blank pages have been added to the original book. Mumbai gun dealers will not entertain License books with added papers either. Would you add extra pages to your Passport ever? An Arms License too is an as important document as the Passport.
Cheers!!!
