Airgun Pellet import ( courier) from UK experience

This is posted in "Legal Eagle" section because it is supposed to cover the "importing" angle also which is the point of this post instead of the quality or use of the pellets.
About a year ago , I ordered two tins of RWS Superdome pellets from http://www.targetsports.co.uk. I specifically choose this site becasue my intention was to test the waters at Indian shores and conviniently ,freight was automatically calculated at land shipping ( 3 GBP). Total cost in Indian Rupees was 1100/- including freight.
In september 2007, I received a show cause notice from Mumbai customs notifying me of importing restricted goods and the parcel will be opened in my presence etc by a certain date. I ignored the notice as visiting Mumbai for pellets worth 1100/- was out of the question.
Then started the series of reminders. I received not less than six ; each on similar lines.
After discussing the matter with a gentleman I decided to write a letter requesting the authorities to release the pellets and send them to Hyderabad postal authorities on payment of a fine/penalty. However, I did not ultimately proceed with writing of the letter.
About two months back, the pellets were suddenly delivered at my home with Rs. 450/-penalty imposed . So, total cost of two tins of 500 pellets each worked out Rs. 1500+ in Indian Rs.
Both the tins were slightly damaged and about 10 pellets in each tin were deformed. The brand delivered was RWS 'Fieldline' instead of 'Superdome'
This post is not made to establish a point of law but only to share my experience. I am also not encouraging anybody to apply the "wait out" tactics. Similar to my earlier knife import from the same site, this was done merely to test the actual course the merchandise takes after reaching India.
