import of firearms has been banned since 1986.
what was the situation before that. What kind of weapons could be imported.

i have been lookin on the net for some info...but first hand info would be great....no better place than IFG.....

Oh well I remember My uncle Imported a pair of S&W .32 snubbies...lot of ammo form UK... later it was a pair of Brno's a mod-1 and a mod- 2- everything in pairs since he had two sons

Later it was a pair of W&S SBBLs....

Another uncle also brought in a Brno Mod2 with a suppressor...naturally the suppressor was confiscated

Thats all I can remember at short notice...

Well we got Brno .22 from NRAI, guys travelled to Bangkok and bought 30s in Brno and WIn model 70.

A couple of Parker Hale and Midland 30s were imported ( 30-06 ), that's for starters off the cuff. If I investigate, lot more can be found.

was it easy to import weapons. did one need membership to any rifle club .... ??

wat was the duty to be paid to import them??

I have seen Pump action 12 Gauge came in lieu of Beretta 9mm pistol , Ruger auto rifle in .22, .32 Charter arms revolver, CZ .32 pistol, Webley Scott revolver, Ruger .22 pistol, Colt .38 revolver not the snub nose one ..I think 9mm pistols were OK before 1984. Atleast thats when some one I know had ordered.

Dad got himself a .32 S&W when we returned from W. Samoa in 1977 - it was ordered from a London gunshop and consigned to him, I believe the total cost (including duties) came to less than INR 10,000 at the time.

Mom got a .32 Webley for my maternal uncle when returning from London in 1979 (IIRC). The revolver was cleared and entered on his license on payment of duties, there was no restriction on transfer/ sale to someone else. No club membership or anything else was required really.

The last one to come in via this route was through my paternal uncle who got an .32 Erma from Singapore in the early 80's, just before they shut everything down - I believe there were gunshops in Singapore in those days specialising in selling guns to Indian visitors and directly consigning them to the airline (due to legal restrictions in Singapore).

All 3 guns are still with the original license holders.

There was a control on import and later it was totally banned....the reason being that too much of imports of firearms would effect the law and order situation. I think the total firearms imported (into india) in the year when the ban came into force was I think just around 300-400. These figures are for the whole country and in a full year.....as against that Kanpur alone must be issuing those many revolvers in a month now....if the imports are opened today who will buy these revolvers at 77000/-?????

The import of sporting arms was banned in January 1986, to be precise. Earlier a passenger traveling abroad who possessed a valid arms license issued anywhere within Indian Union could get a fire arm in personal baggage. I know people who traveled to Singapore and got not one but three fire arms each as they had valid license for as many. One was also allowed to import ammunition provided the quantity did not exceed the quota allowed at one time on the license. Certain Air Lines indeed were reluctant to carry this as a baggage but a Cathey Pacific did not mind carrying it. The procedure was to get a certificate(NOC) from the Indian Embassy in S'pore, buy the gun, provide your flight details and pay the fees (police & fire brigade) for having it delivered to the Airport. It was then handed over to the cabin crew as a security parcel. This parcel would then be handed over to you at the port of your disembarkation. This is how yours truly got a .22 LR Walther PPK/S along with .22 and 12 bore ammo from Singapore. The pistol cost me RS. 4200/ including import duty. The customs were easy with duty as they also stamped the license so that the importer could not sell the fire arm for 5 yrs. minimum. Gud ole days.

I could be wrong but AFAIK the reason for clamping down on imports of firearms was the Balance of Payments being a problem... India at that time being very very foreign exchange poor... and firearms were considered a frivolous extravagance of the rich... hence....

Unfortunately even though we are now in the reverse position with an excess of foreign exchange in our coffers.... in this country it is easier to have things banned than unbanned and there is little hope of having this ill thought of legislation repealed...

Little chance... but not impossible... if enough people are behind it.... this is a democracy after all, or so I am told...

We are making an attempt to move a motion in the parliment through a combination of our COngress ( I ) and RJD MPs. Lets see how it goes. THe BJP does not allow the house to function to complete even basic agenda of the day. When will new bills ever be passed in the remaining twelve months.

The idiots have made price rise an issue. THe phenomenon is global, how can the govt. take blame for inflation ?

Nevertheless when this ignorant bunch gives our MPs a chance to conduct some business in the Lok Sabha we will raise this issue.

im among the few members who cant sleep at night without having a look of this site.i never reply to posts and the reason is that im not having command over english so i hesitate.like all of you i too eat guns drink guns sleep guns.if i would be given chance to choose between bugatti veyron and 92 fs ill choose the latter. i cant stop myself replying this thread the reason.......im frustrated.....why? i bought a .22 ofb junk at 55k and if there were no ban on the import i would have been having a las baer custom gun at that price(in 38 super offcourse,they dont make in 32). i just want to ask a question to all the members if you love something or if you are passionate about something is it not your duty to try to get it. its high time, all political parties trying to attract(read fool) the masses. is it not the right time to strike. lets all the members who are really passionate about guns meet in delhi and then we will take appointments with the concerned ministers and convey them the massages that there are millions of license holders in our country who are compromising on iof products,these parties can win over there hearts by lifting the ban. i know its not easy,but lets give it a try. i like to quote george bernard shaw" take care to get what you like,or you'll be forced to like what you get". im ready to come to delhi anytime you all say.please do something.i dont know whether you all will be able to get something out of it, after all its my english.take care.

i think there should be vote for those who are willing to amend the gun law.
