Custom duty exempted on Air guns of .177 cal

Post by danish21 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 4:35 pm

A boost for Indian shooting

February 29. It turned out to be a day for rejoice for everyone connected with shooting sports as the Finance Minister in his budget speech today announced that air rifle and air pistols have been totally exempted from the custom duty for everyone as compared to the earlier rule which was duty free only for the National Shooters. With this rule now even a beginner can import a duty free air gun.

This move will certainly make the sport of shooting more popular in the country as the air rifle and air pistol events are the most popular among the masses and as compared to other events of shooting the training costs are low and they also do not require arms license.

These events are commonly played by many school and college students in India. As the domestic manufactures are not able meet required precision standards, most of the shooters prefer to import air rifles and air pistols. Beginners especially the young children used to find it very difficult, to import these weapons because they did not have sufficient funds to pay the heavy custom duties.

"This will facilitate broad basing of shooting sports in the country and will and make it more affordable now for many aspiring shooters" said Naveen Jindal a shooter and MP who was vigorously following up this case with the Ministry of Finance requesting them to exempt air weapons from the levy of custom duties.

This move is very much welcomed by the shooting fraternity in this Olympic year in which four out of nine Olympic qualified shooters would be participating in the air gun events at the Beijing Olympics....Thank you Mr. FM. indianshooting.com

HI! What any info on what cals are permitted? I had read a news item somewhere that running target air event might be re-introduced in the olympics - If it happens then it should go all the way till .25 I think ( havto chk out the exact cal. used though) Might require a amendment in the notification. Hell with all the problems in India with firearms and lack of training at least the airsoft and paintballs should be made totally duty free so that citizens can use it to practice and a new sport can develop.

Wow! This is great news indeed!
air rifle and air pistols have been totally exempted from the custom duty for everyone
Does the rule that you need to be a member of a State or National Rifle Association to import been taken away too?

Excuse me if its a stupid question. I just asked cause it says it exempted for everyone.

Mo, this exemption looks like it's only for duty rates. I don't think it would affect the import policy.

I think GG is right, the link provided by Mo clearly says that the duties have been deleted but nothing about the chabging of import policies..

Inder,

If there is a postal or Member of Parliament e-mail address post it here, so everyone can send him his/her thanks.

Now watch how NRAI tries taking credit for this in their next newsletter...
