Welcome to IFG. I am certain that you did not read on this forum that a civilian can buy INSAS or SLRs. No, you cannot buy them and they will still be PB. Not the just the auto and semi-auto features, the calibres are also PB.

Actually the INSAS calibre 5.56x45 is not on the list of restricted calibres. However, semi-automatic long guns are all on the restricted list therefore requiring a license from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. The SLR uses 7.62x51 which IS INDEED on the list of restricted calibres.
Theoretically if one were able to get the relevant license issued by the MHA, one would still need to convince the Government to sell you one of these rifles from their stocks. As of today there is no policy through which the Government is willing to sell either rifle to any category of civilians. However, if you were the Prime Minister's son they MAY BE willing to make an exception for you. Short of that, there is no hope!
Cheers!

Since your basic question has been answered here, let me say that you probably did read on a forum somewhere that SLR's were available to civilians.
The civilians in question were US citizens only. I don't believe civilians in any other country were able to get these.
I'm not sure if it was mentioned on IFG but inch pattern FN FAL's (British/Rhodesian/Aussie L1A1) and their reverse-engineered copies (Ishapore ??/Tiruchirapalli ?? SLR's) were available..
There were also German G1's, Argentinian FAL's, Israeli FAL's, Austrian FAL's, etc.
These were stripped of their receivers and brought in as parts kits.
The 1980's and the 1990's were the heyday of the FAL in the US as they were cheap and readily available. Most of them have disappeared into private armories and are not seen much anymore.
US manufacturers produced FAL receivers and combined with the parts kit, you could produce a complete firing rifle (Semi-auto only).
There are a few companies still selling complete (new) FAL's to US civilians. DSA Inc is one of them. Check out their online catalog.
There was an exception; if you were an insurgent in Libya, fighting old Muammer and his regime, then you could have had FAL's from European and Israeli armories.
They were very powerful FAL's. They came with air-support!

Re: Can civillain buy Insas/SLR(army rejected)
Abhijeet, apropos your comment on the PM's kid, I remember reading (in some newspaper / magazine article) that certain political big-wigs do get allotted not only SLRs and INSASs, but also AKs from captured stocks. Absurd, isn't it, that people who shouldn't, in general, be trusted with a kitchen knife are not onlt trusted to run this country, but also with lethal firearms!!
But where does all the rejected SLRs and INSASs go? Are they destroyed? Exported to Bangladesh and Maldives or similar? Can one find out through RTI what exactly happens to the obsolete arms with the armed forces or cops? There must have been at one time a few million Ishapore SMLEs rejected, where are they?
XL, I believe one can go to Syria even now, fight old Assad's regime, and you'll get FAL, AK, or even M4s? Of course, you just might get Sarin'ed by our Assyrian friend!

Re: Can civillain buy Insas/SLR(army rejected)
I would like to add further to mundaire's post , that theoretically , even if a civilian is able to legally acquire a firearm which can chamber and fire 5.56 X 45 ammo , the question lies from whom will he / she be able to legally buy the ammo for the firearm ?mundaire wrote:

Hehe! I think you're quite correct esdee.XL, I believe one can go to Syria even now, fight old Assad's regime, and you'll get FAL, AK, or even M4s? Of course, you just might get Sarin'ed by our Assyrian friend!
These Syrian theater FAL's might not be so potent. They don't come with air support....yet.
