Inherit a firearm

I have searched this forum, but couldn't find a clear answer (or maybe I didn't read very carefully; some of the acronyms, etc. confuse me). I'm a newbie here, so please be gentle.
I moved to the US 20 years ago, and am a US citizen and an OCI (it may not be relevant, but bear with me). My dad, a retired Army officer, has a couple of weapons. One of them is a semi-automatic rifle that he got while in service. Now I would like to inherit it, and bring it to the US. I've been reading far and wide about the procedure.
From the US side: I need to get a FFL (basically, a dealer) to import it, after applying to the BATF. So far so good.
From the Indian side, I'm totally clueless.

- Can I inherit the weapon, even though I don't reside in India? I know that citizenship is irrelevant for licenses; but the question here is the fact that I don't live there.
- If I could inherit the item, can I export it?
- Could I, hypothetically, disassemble it and carry it in my carry-on baggage for getting it repaired in the US? (After getting the DGCA authorization, of course).
