I was perusing the Arms Act 1959 and I read

(i) "prohibited arms" means---

(i) firearms so designed or adapted that, if pressure is applied to the trigger, missiles continue to be discharged until pressure is removed from the trigger or the magazine containing the missiles is empty, or

which basically means that all automatic firearms are illegal and fair enough. However, owing to the wording, I believe that semi-automatic weapons are also legal?

I wanted to know whether that is the case and if one can get a license for a semi-automatic.

As per this description, only full auto weapons will be classified as prohibited. For semi automatics, pressure will have to be applied to the trigger each time a single missile is discharged, to use the same phraseology. In fact, all pistols are semi auto, so does that make all of them 'prohibited arms'?

Semi-auto rifles and shotguns are on the special license list.

Which basically means that they are almost impossible to obtain with the proper ta-alluqaat ?

I mean, getting a bolt-action is hard enough already and I presume getting a semi-automatic would be more difficult still? Please explain thoroughly

For what its worth go ahead and get a pistol license, that's a semi-auto.
If you become a renowned shot in skeet, if I am not mistaken, when you are given an import permit and license;
that is also the road to a semi-auto shotgun.
Now my memory is a little off but the semi-auto 12 bore is still street legal for skeet.
Please do more research on my gospel on the shotgun.
But why the fascination with semi-auto? Join the fauj and go full auto , you are still young. Nothing like messing with the best on govt. expense.

Please read scehdule 1 of Indian Arms Rules 1962 for clarity on the matter. Semi automatic rifles and shotguns are PB. pistols are not.

The arms act defines "prohibited arms". Arms which are automatic or semi automatic in nature fall in the category of Prohibited Bore (PB) arms and the remaining arms which are non automatic or bolt action type are covered under the category of Non-Prohibited Bore (NPB) arms. Prior to 1987, licenses for acquisition and possession of Prohibited Bore (PB) and Non Prohibited Bore (NPB) firearms were issued by the District Magistrate/ State Government concerned. But, from 1987, powers to issue licenses for prohibited bore (PB) arms were withdrawn from the State Government/ District Magistrate concerned and since then the licences for PB weapons are being issued by the Central Government alone (MHA), while licenses
for Non Prohibited Bore weapons (NPB) continue to be issued by the District Magistrate/State Government concerned.

The operative word there is `continue` as that implies more than one and, therefore, full-auto fire. To operate a semi-automatic you pull the trigger and the gun fires. It does NOT `continue` firing as you have to release the trigger and pull again for the next shot.
