Indians For Guns

(I'm glad I discovered this board! Thanks to the Admins!)

My parents still live in India, but I am a US citizen (and the proud owner of a Beretta).
My dad has a couple of guns that I would like to acquire and take with me. Unfortunately,
they are of prohibited bore. It is strictly for sentimental reasons; I'm sure I can get the
same in the US for a small fraction of the price one would pay here.

It is my guess (from perusing these boards) that I can theoretically get a license
even though I'm not an Indian citizen anymore (inheritance based license? Not sure how
it works with non-citizens). Is this true?

Secondly, even if I got the license and transferred the weapon to me, how would I
go about exporting it to myself?

The export of firearms of current and popular bore ( I expect these are probably calibers that are easily available) is, AFAIK prohibited. Whether your dad's guns are PB or NPB, may or may not matter in this context.
An NOC from the Archeological Department( or such I think) is required to prove that the firearm is not an antique and so may be exported.Finally an export license will be required.
If the sole purpose of you trying to get a PB license is so that you may ultimately export them then it may not be worth the trouble to do it, more over there may be a relatively easier method.

There are licensed exporters who know the procedures and they are not limited by the number of firearms or whether they are PB or NPB. You could deposit your dad's guns with them and ask them to export them to you, in the USA. Please bear in mind that it will not be cheap, nor troublefree nor quick. I guess sentiment has its cost!!
