Regarding Importing Ammunition

Post by hardeepsinghbedi » Sun Nov 25, 2012 9:44 pm

Dear Everyone,

Can anybody clear that a arms licence holder going about can bring 50 cartridges or more as I met one dealer and he told me that a person can bring more than 50 cartridges in time with proper custom duty paid. He said the person should have the limit of ammunition what you are bringing from abroad. Now I checked the customs department which says a person can bring 50 cartridges with him. I am also attaching the link below.

http://www.customsmumbaiairport.gov.in/ ... ?LinkID=67

Is it true if I bring 500 cartridges and pay proper duty I am allowed to bring them to india.
With Regards,

Upto 50(depending on your one time and annual ammo limit) allowed duty free. Thats what it says.
Iirc, i had read somewhere that the total limit is 10kgs.
Cant give you a link for the same. Sorry.
You could try the RTI route though to clarify the matter

Hi,
i am based in u.s and i took 50 cartridges of fiochhi .32 acp auto with me and declared , paid duties and everything was fine... but my hometown gun dealer suggested me that i could have brought 100 of them ..released 50 of them right away and then rest of would be detained and then go after a week and get released those too by paying duties..upon production of licence... his advise somewhat make sense to me ..as it might be a loophole of dealing with customs... but i have not done practical.. but would do it definately.. because it is just $18 per box of fifty.. so even extras get detained .. then to hell with that.... i still walk out with 50 cartridges...

Has anyone brought in more than 50 cartridges at a time?

Hardeep, since you are a "renowned shooter", you need not bother with all this. Simply order your 15,000 rounds of ammunition from overseas and take delivery of them - duty free - in India!

Don't you see the contradictions and blanks in your posts? In one post you say that you have 15000 cartridges quota per weapon and now you say that you have it for your .22 event only.

Sorry, Hardeep, you are not providing complete details as to the license situation of yours and these bits and pieces are only making the post count go up against what should be a straight jacket situation.

AFAIK, You pay taxes for cartridges beyond 50. If you have 500 limit, you can get 500,but will have to pay taxes for the 450 remaining.

Best-
Vikram

Incidentally, in exactly which .22 event are you qualified as renowned shooter? Just curious...

Cheers!

Dear Vikram,

Thank you for your reply. I think you got problem with understanding English. I clearly said that I can only import 15000 cartridges for .22 Rifle as I am a renowned shoter in that category. My other weapons also got 15000 cartridges each but for your knowledge a renowned shooter can only import cartridges with NRAI and DGFT permission for the event a person is a renowned shooter. Even if I am allowed to keep 15000 cartridges I cannot get permission from NRAI for importing .32 or .380 cartridges. My simple question was if I am travelling abroad and I get 500 or 1000 cartridges from Australia or anywhere in europe I am legally allowed to get more than 50 cartridges. If yes then please send me the notification.

Secondly, before writing such replies on forum please see what you are saying.
