Is it possible to carry a licenced firearm abroad via an airlines (packed in the cargo luggage) legally?

sure you can, first need to deal with the biggest problem in the world the gent in white, you would need an export licence [import licences? to bring it back] and deal with the customs etc here in India. once you can overcome India its get easy.

now depending on which airline you fly with and their arms policy, also if direct flight or stopover this can be a problem in its own right.

the frangi places you wish to visit, need to apply for a firearms licence in advance. also best to find out the frangi rules of importing an arm[or a leg for that matter]

as naga say's by the time you get all papers right,your visa would have expired?????....

The procedure is very simple...all you need to do is get approval from the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation)---that takes a few days.

There are no export or import permits required when you are taking the weapon with you as part of checked in baggage,off course you need to check with the airlines what rules apply in the country which you plan to visit.
Most countries in Europe,Africa & South America arent really to bothered as long as the purpose is stated,for the US you should check the with the Beaurau of ATF

One of our members "Safarigent" had taken his shot gun to Italy a couple of weeks ago,he will be better able to advise.

interesting topic-i await more input on this-are airguns also in thic cateogary or do other rules apply for them since they dont require a licence in most countries

i think once you have the DGCA letter as Sanjay said it should be ok. it might be worth getting the letter and going overseas.

Naga,confirmed from a friend,apart from the above you would also require a letter from NRAI ........stating purpose for carrying,and also a letter from the Org or Association from the Country that you are visiting.

what if one is not a member of NRAI etc? what happens then?

Go via the State Association-----NRAI doesnt have an issue in giving letters of recomendation.

I had taken my shotgun to italy in april and the process was this:
Application letter to delhi state rifle association for a letter from nrai.
Then took that letter to nrai and collected nrai letter after a week.
Application to dgca. Got that in hnd in two weeks time.
permit from the italian shooting permit. Within a week.
These all happened simultaneously.
Meaning i had the pemits all issued and in hand within 15 days.
No hassles anywhere.

Thanks Sanjay and Safarigent for the detailed info. I am sure there are plenty of people on here who were wondering how to get their guns repaired abroad as major parts like barrels are not available in India.

Now there is one more reason to join a rifle club If you don't mind me asking, did you take it abroad for repairs or competition or both

I read your reply regarding taking your arms overseas after getting permission from DGCA. As you said in your post that permit from italian shooting permit. Please can you confirm where exactly you get this italian permit. secondly, can you advice me if I need to take my .32 Llama pistol for repair or getting new barrel from spain what exactly I need to do after get permit from DGCA. Please confirm you took your shotgun for repair. DGCA gives you permission for changing barrel or slide.

Please also confirm that if you get permission from DGCA then you can import the damaged part by courier or person needs to take along while going overseas.

1. You get the permit from the F.I.T.A.V, the italian shooting federation. Generally, the gunsmith/ company you are taking your fire arm to will co ordinate that for you.
2. I have already explained what you need to do to take your weapon outside.
3. You can take your weapon for repair or training. I stated training on mine. But then i did train as well...
4. Why would you want to import a damaged part? Neither do i know the legality of that, nor does it interest me becuase i fail to see why you would want to get damaged parts back. Although i do think that there will be licensing issues.

Thank you for your reply. I wrote import by mistake. I mean if my arms part is damaged then with DGCA permission can we get the part from overseas. For example my barrel is damaged. with permission of DGCA can we import the new part from europe.
