Dear Sirs

I was just wondering what the deal with CCI ammunition in India is? Is there a problem with this brand, is it prohibited? Why would someone want me to put CCI as Savage? What is the link here? The ammunition in question is CCI Mini Mags .22LR in both solid and hollow point.

Also, in India, is .22LR called .22 Savage?

Thanks for all your help.

.22LR is not prohibited. Why does someone want you to put .22LR as .22 Savage? .22LR is not called .22 Savage in India.

Thankyou for that GM.

Is the brand CCI prohibited? Can you think of a reason why someone would want me to change the brand name CCI to Savage? To this man it is imperative that on the invoice it says Savage but i cannot understand why. First he tells me that in India .22LR is known as .22Savage and now he says that i must down that this ammunition will work in Savage rifles. It is really strange and i cannot understand why.

Also, i have already decided not to deal with him but would like to get to the bottom of his strange request.

It should work now, $10 says .22lr is not in importable cartridge list and some crafty dealer put .22 Savage sticker on top to get the shipment cleared. .22 Savage is centerfire cartridge and .22lr is rimfire. No way in hell somebody would confuse one with another. Eh, maybe our babus.

I am very familiar with guns and ammunition, that is why this sent alarm bells ringing as soon as it was requested. I myself am not Indian, nor do i live in India, but have been asked by an Indian dealer to supply him with large quantities of .22LR ammuntion.

From i have read though, it was seem a dealer is not allowed to import .22LR into India. Do you produce a lot .22LR in India?

.22 LR ammo is produced in India. It is produced in Government factories (Indian Ordnance Factories - IOF). It is quite likely that this dealer is not allowed to import .22 LR, so he wants you to say that it is .22 Savage. While you might not face any consequences for supplying him with ammo, it is against the law for him to import it. If you do decide to deal with this unscrupulous individual, I suggest that you get your money in advance.
I'd advise you not to supply the dealer because you might get into trouble for that. (International arms smuggling is not a petty theft)
Priyan,
International Arms Smuggling? You need to stop making statements about stuff you don't know anything about.

Oscar07 after reading the link mentioned by sudhaiob matter became clear. As per government policy ammunition of any bore that is manufactured in India is not allowed for import by arms dealers. Since .22LR is manufactured in India, it is not allowed for import. This policy appears unreasonable and against the Competition Act 2002. Instead of fighting this policy some dealers resort to these kind of tricks.

Dear xl_target,
That sentence was a reference to "Lord of War" not a serious one, it was meant to be humorous.

The above information is spot on. While .22 Savage is on the list of ammunition calibres allowed for commercial import by dealers, .22 LR is not on that list and dealer cannot import it (legally). As mentioned some dealers have exporters paste misleading stickers on boxes to have their consignments cleared by customs. I have seen such stickers pasted on imported .22 LR boxes in the past, so I am assuming that this is a fairly common practice amongst Indian dealers who import ammunition.

Other popular calibres which are not permitted for commercial import (by dealers) are 12 gauge, .32 ACP & .32 S&W. All of these calibres may however be imported by individual "renowned shots" for their own personal use (for target practice only).

.22 LR is produced in India by the Govt. owned Khirkee Factory (KF headstamp). The price is high (about 37 US cents per pop) and the quality is low. There is therefore a huge demand for imported .22 LR ammo, which retails for double (or more) the price of KF ammo in India.

At first this man denied all knowledge of these laws, he said that there was absoloutley no problem importing .22LR. Now he claims that that was the law and that they have now changed and importing .22LR is legal. Any truth to this?
