Hi

As per some of my previous posts , I was finally able to import the fireram into India from USA. Due to lack of license its been detained at Indian customs. I am writing a short story on this ... on how to get a firearm from US into India , which might help others ... but meanwhile , I am in a state of about to apply for a license and have a question

1. Is there any format for the recommendation letter ? Pune Police asks for recommendation from 2 reputed persons. Should the letter say that I am of good character or should it also state that I should be granted a license ?
2. Reputed person ? Can this be a doctor etc ? I dont have any political background.
3. Can the person be a relative ? My father in law is a retired defense personnel ... will that help ?

any help will really be appreciated ..

if the police want a recommadation letter(which is not in the arms act thus illegal request) go for someone well known. not family member.

the letter could say that they have known you for so long and you are of good character (unlike the police) and there is no reason for the police not to grant the licence.

try you local MLA he might give the letter if you promise to vote for him, try them all

If your father in law is retired defense, does he have any acquaintances that are still in active service who would also be willing to write a letter?

For the recommendation letter, you contact Gunmark Armoury in Pune. He gives training for use of firearms and then issues a certificate/letter recommending that the person can handle the weapon. He charges exorbitantly for the same, but I have seen people getting this letter from them when applying for the licence.

Thanks everyone for such a quick response ... It is because of comments from this group that I was able to get the firearm into India ... so I am sure with your support and help , i ll be able to get the license soon.

Asking for "recommendation" letter is not part of legal requirements under Arms Act 1959. The only legal role of the police in the licensing process, is to search and furnish to the licensing authority, the presence of any criminal records on you. Anyways if "recommendation" letter is the only thing standing in the way of getting the license, you may try getting "recommendation" letter as advised by other members on this forum. In case your application is rejected, the next step would be to appeal to the appelate authority. If still rejected then file a writ in High Court.
