Dear IFGians,

Wish me luck- I am applying for a license. Had a word with dad about it, and he said, "Do it." Getting the docs ready- might take a week or so. Is there anything that I should take care of? Please suggest.

Thanks,
Saif

hi saif

i had also applied for new arms license, i belong to Punjab. the process here is really tiresome.

i got the ncessary docs. and applied on 7th march 2011 after that two policemen arrived at my home on 21st march. they verified my residence and prepared a report that i had no criminal background etc etc. after about a week i got a call to appear before ssp for interview. i went to ssp's office and appeared for interview he asked me various questions reg my profession and reason for why i'm applying arms license. after that my file was sent to ADC office now i'm waiting to appear for 2nd interview before ADC , they hv fixed wednesday as hearing date for all who apply for arms license. after the 2nd interview my file will reach DC'S office. then i'll appear for the final interview. after the Dc gives his approval then i'll get my arms license.

for the beginners they give license for 12 bore only. for pistol i need to try again after 3 months.

lets wait n watch. i also need best wishes.

Thank you, @ruger_rugged. Yes, I am from Mumbai.

Imran, I am applying for a 12 bore license. Mhy idea is clear. I need a license so that I can have a gun for self-defense. And so that I can get all the awesome toys that are sold in the US, which are restricted to be imported in India.

Had met dad's friend who's in customs. He suggested me to get a license, and then I can import any damn air gun and pistol of my choice. :)

Thanks,
Saif

You don't need an Arms License to import air weapons. What you do need is membership of the NRAI or your local rifle club. And that too is restricted to .177 cal .

Secondly and importantly please don't consider air weapons as 'toys'. They are anything but that.

Katana, I agree with you. I wish to import a few .22 cal air guns as well. You need a license for it, right? Also, there are restrictions on a lot of airsoft AEGs, and snipers. As a license holder, I need not worry about the customs hassles.

Thanks,
Saif

Hi Saif,

You arms license doesn't allow you to import .22 cal air guns. You need an import license from DGFT to do the same.

Thanks, m24- appreciate it. What about the ones that are sold in India? The IHP ones? You need a license to buy them even if you're a member of a rifle club, right?

Regards,
Saif

Nope. You can buy them over the counter.

Saif,

Don't get me wrong but you really need to do your homework before you make your choices. Since you are applying for an Arms License please work out all probabilities and reasons for making such an application. Your being situated in Bombay will have it's own nuances in the application procedure. From what I have been told, the metropolis is one of the most unlikely places to get an application approved. Now one wouldn't want to burn his fingers in the process and then have an aversion to the process at a later date.

In simple terms, sharpen your axe before striking!
