Is .380, .357 legal in India?

I contacted couple of gunshops in U.S and they don't seem to carry .40 cal Glock 23. And ones who can order are asking over $600+. So please tell me if .380, .357 are prohibited or non prohibited bores so i can opt for Glock 25 or Glock 32.

I read the article but it is 3 years old so I don't know if the law has changed or not.

Thanks.

.380, .38 Special, .357 magnum are non prohibited bores.

Prohibited Bore - Arms included in Arms Rules 1962 Schedule I Category I(b) and I(c)

Non Prohibited Bore - Arms included in Arms Rules 1962 Schedule I Category III

So as per the link 1. part (B), .380 (glock 25) is prohibited?

GlockFanWorld,
.380 ACP Glocks cannot be purchased in the US unless you are in law Enforcement. The guns lack BATFE points to be imported for civilians.
The .357 that Glock is chambered for is the .357 SIG round and that is going to be as scarce as hens teeth in India.

The .357 Magnum round is considered a NPB and as such is legal in India and apparently ammo for it is even available there.
Though there are rifles chambered for it (mainly lever actions), it is primarily a handgun round and was designed as such.
Are you sure that you're not thinking of the 375 H&H Magnum caliber (for rifles)?

Both PB and NPB are perfectly legal if you have the licenses for them. Since .357 Magnum in NPB cartridge, if any rifle fires the same .357 magnum cartridge, the rifle can be possessed under NPB license for rifle.

Dear GlockFanWorld,
You will be surprised to know that there are dual rules for PB and NPB in India. It may further surprise you that .357 Mag and .38 Special is NPB in Northern states like Delhi, UP, Punjab, Harayana etc etc , BUT the same .357 Mag and .38 Special is PB in Maharashtra. You will have to find out the exactly what applies to your City or State in India.

I just re-read your post GlockFan World and am very surprised that the dealers you have contacted don't stock the Glock 23. It is a pretty common handgun and should not cost that much.
Look at this ad. They list Glock 23's for $499.99. http://www.impactguns.com/store/glock23.html
..or here for $459: http://www.glockworld.com/category/870-Glock_40sw.aspx
You need to check more gun stores and don't go back to the two that you visited if you want a Glock. You need to go to someone who is actually a dealer for Glock if you want a good price.

These are only self styled and self created rules by babus. Probably you are about to bust these rules with help of RTI application you propose to do at http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 24&start=0 :)

I might just get 4th gen Glock 22, I hear it has 20% less recoil than other.40s. I live in Southern illinois. A lot of people want guns but they don't bother applying because we can not concealed carry here hence there are no great gun shops. There are lots of gun shop in Saint Louis which is like 5 miles away from here but according to new law, I can not buy handguns from Saint Louis. I can buy a shotgun from STL but no handgun. So my options are very limited.

By the way thank you those websites. I may call a dealer tomorrow and see if he is willing to FAX his FFL to one of those websites.

Thanks again.

I don't know what the rules are IL for transferring a handgun but generally in most states you're looking at a $20 to $25 transfer fee and about $15 to $25 for shipping. Add state sales tax onto that. Good Luck.

Keep in mind that the 22 is bigger than the 23 but I believe the 4th gen with the RTF offers a better grip.

The last time I'd gone to the range (a couple of weeks back), there were a bunch of .357 Sig empties lying around. I assume that it must have been one brought over on TR or maybe something one of the renown pistol shooters imported as a carry piece... anyhow, AFAIK no dealer in India carries .357 Sig ammo OR .40 S&W ammo.

You will have to depend solely on importing 50 rounds each time you travel overseas - something that (in most cases) may be easier said than done! In many countries you may not be allowed to purchase ammo without a permit, so the only option would be have the dealer consign it directly to the airline, for which the dealer will of course charge a fee - I doubt that just 50 rounds of ammo would be worth whatever fee is charged. In other countries you may have to fork out additional fees etc. for things like export permits etc.

In Semi-autos stick to the .380 ACP/ .32 S&W/ .25 ACP/ .30 Tok/ 7.63 Mauser/
In revolvers you could consider the .22 LR/ .32 S&W Long/ .327 Magnum/ .357 Magnum/ .38 Special (be warned - ammo for the last two calibres listed can prove to be quite expensive)

Ammo for those is available from dealers AND they are ALL NPB calibres. .22LR, .32 ACP & .32 S&W Long ammo is made in India the rest will be all imported ammo and priced accordingly.

Where did you read that? Reread the first post at http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 80&start=0 - and try not to speed read this time ;) - the answer is in that post.
