The duty gone is a plus, but one still needs membership of association to import one,State or NRAI while the latter is expensive the former is painful to get but cheaper. The pain of getting one in far outwieghs the savings on the AR,unless off course one has all the loose ends tied up

You guys aint looking at it the right way. Be optimistic.
You had to have the membership earlier also when getting the air rifle through courier. So is it now, but you dont have to pay a heafty 35.3% duty no more.

And the better part is if you aint a member of any club - get it in with you when flying back :) NO DUTIES AND NO MEMBERSHIP OF ANY CLUB REQUIRED.

Be happy mates, lets not be the skeptic Indians whining as always. If you want an Air rifle you'll have to work for it. You'll have to do something. Either get a rifle club membership or get it in with you the next time you plan to go for a PHOREN trip.
i know it aint perfect, you still cant get the air rifle delivered to your home as in many countries. But hey its a good start.

Cheers
Sid

Hey sid,
is the above rule applicable for co2 guns also, since they also belong to the air gun category.
Regards
Happy.

You have obviously got your facts all wrong, suggest dont even try it,the AR will never leave the airport and you will only cause yourself some grief.

Not quite - while you don't require a club membership when bringing back an airgun from overseas (as part of baggage), you will have to pay the applicable duty - unless you are a rifle club member, and in all probability even then the first few chaps will have to show the notification to convince the chaps that it is indeed a duty free item now. News can take a long time to percolate through the ranks of bureaucracy... sometimes it is true ignorance, but mostly it's just them being difficult out of habit.

The new rule is quite clear on the fact that no duties for .177 cal airguns imported by club members.

The original 2005 notification allowing the import of airguns by clubs members can be found under the Legal Notices sub-section of the downloads section of this website. It makes clear the "eligibility" of who is allowed to import - viz club members only.

I guess the new order (making the import duty zero) would soon be published in the Gazette of India.

Import via the personal baggage route is governed by the baggage rules, therefore removing the restriction on calibre and membership of a club when importing an airgun using that route.

Please point out where i am getting it wrong. But the doc uploaded before reads
"90.1. Customs duty and CV duty have been exempted on air guns of 0.177 calibre (air
rifles and air pistols) of Chapter 93. Consequently, these goods are also exempted from 4%
special additional duty of customs (S.No. 582 of notification No. 21/2002-Customs,
inserted vide notification No.21/2008-Customs, refers)."

It doesn't mention any where that you have to be a member of a rifle club. It's as per the previous ruling that if you're importing it via post/courier you need to be a member of a rifle club. But if getting it via baggage you don't require any such thing (membership of a rifle club). So shouldnt it be - if you are carrying an air rifle back as a personal baggage you do not require a membership..... please clarify.

Cheers
Sid

Sid you are right the new notification does not mention eligibility, it simply reduces the applicable duty to 0%. Therefore, it means that eligibility remains as per the existing rules - if importing directly via post or courier you must be a member of a recognised shooting club/ rifle association.
