It's a chicken and egg thing. The only way out is to borrow from a renowned shot :)
It is not merely a chicken and egg but something else. Reading this may give you an idea why common people are not allowed to import arms and ammunition even though such law is unreasonable and unconstitutional http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17039

Sad state of affairs Mentor :(.

Why can't NAGRI become an institution like NRAI and start importing ammunition and arms for the newbie shooters or maybe completely change this import BS... I don't know.

Hi guys! I have joined this forum recently and followed some threads but still looking for up-to-date info...
I am trying to find, - As a common Indian citizen can I import a 0.177 caliber air rifle as checked-in baggage while returning from abroad?
It would be a great help if somebody could share his/her experience or throw some light on the topic!

As a common citizen you cant import .177 cal air rifles.
You need to be a member of district / state / national rifle association.

If you had read the very first post, of the very first thread, posted as a sticky in the Airguns Section, you would have got the answer to your question. Please read Scenario 2 - Import as personal baggage at http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3481

Not going to jump the gun so quickly but there should be other alternatives to NRAI . Or you people needs to figure out how to break their monopoly . File a writ or register your own associations or whatever a common everyday person can do to break their hold . If there is well there are ways , go for it - Haji

Ashok Rai wrote:This notification has actually brought lot of trouble to shooters who do not come under category of "Renowned Shooters". While bringing change to Licensing Note 1 they ignored and forgot the following para with help of which all new shooters purchase 0.177 caliber air rifles/air pistols "However, Import of 0.177 bore air guns and air pistols will be free for shooters registered with Rifle Clubs or District/State/National Rifle Association" This para is deleted now so this notification brought joy to only few people but shall cause major problems to all new entrants.
Ashok, you are misinterpreting the notification. The previous notification which allowed for free import of .177 cal airguns by shooters who are registered members of associations/ clubs is still in force. This (new) notification merely makes changes to how associations/ clubs/ renowned shots may import "arms (including parts thereof) & ammunition" (against import license earlier and NOW free for import). This does NOT rescind the previous notification completely, merely amends it to allow for an easier import regime for renowned shooters/ clubs/ associations. If you are still in any doubt, you may file an RTI with the DGFT requesting clarification on the subject.

Cheers!
