In a study analyzing death rates from 1950 to 1993 in 26 industrialized countries, the firearm-related death rate among children under the age of 15 was over 10 times higher in the United States than in the other countries studied combined.
In 2010, The ATF initiated 10,072 criminal investigations into firearms cases, including illegal possession and firearm trafficking.
According to ATF statistics, there were 5,459,240 firearms manufactured in 2010 in the United States. In 2000, that number was 3,873,210.
There were 992,975 NFA (National Firearms Act) Firearms processed in 2011, up from 147,484 in 2005.
Mandated by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, the FBI launched the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in 1998, which is used by Federal Firearms Licensees to determine whether or not a prospective buyer is eligible to purchase firearms.
Since the inception of the Brady Act in 1994, through the end of 2009, there were over 100 million applications for firearm permits or transfers that were subject to background checks and almost 2 million denials.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, there is an association between household firearm ownership and homicide.
In 2007, there were 182,479 injury related deaths in the U.S. Of those, 31,224 were firearm related.
