Depends on which country you are visiting. Here in the US it's not that difficult, if you are bringing a firearm to participate in an international compitition then you just need a letter from the body. You can also bring in rifles if you are visiting on a hunting tour.

Well if you say you want to bring in a weapon for personal protection then that can get bit messy.
