NCC is NOT partying and wasting your time. NCC, as its motto, Unity and Discipline, teaches cadets very important lessons of life. It gives you a taste of armed forces.It teaches you about Nation building. About selfless perpetual hard work.

If, NCC was compulsory, 26/11 wouldnt have happened. NCC trains you like a jawan. It prepares reserve troops for wars. FYI, during 1971 war, NCC cadets defeated Pak's para forces! Have you seen the Prime Minister's Parade ??

The selfrespect you earn when you command other cadets all wearing a red feather cant be explained!
The time spend at camps, the friends you make, its an experience of a lifetime!

Please, never say NCC is a waste of time.

Everybody has a different opinion, I was in NCC during my high school years.Just like you I thought it teaches you manners and how to be a good citizen but actually it's just conscription in disguise IMHO.
Speaking of being in reserve, I have no intention to go to war after seeing all those liveleak videos.
TBH, 2008 Mumbai attacks would still happen even if everyone in India was tier 1 operator. They had the element of surprise and had fire superiority.
Also in my NCC days we'll have to visit armed forces camp and start training there which lasts upto a month. A month away from home gets really hard during the growing season.
Again, I'm not calling NCC waste of time but forced camping trips are.

On a side note, anyone remember the toothpaste prank?

My grandfather told me that when he was in college ( near 1960) , then NCC was compulsory for all college student. .
