Imported Guns on IFG

Post by nash » Fri Jun 11, 2010 12:27 am

hi guyz!!!

I've been contemplating buying an imported air rifle from the IFG's Buy/Sell section which are on offer from various IFGians...

But just one thing has been coming to my mind all along.. is it worth buying an imported model over here???

Firstly the prices are too high....for obvious reasons....

Secondly.. we dont really know the person(s) selling it.... I know there are so many positive stuff being said and discussed about so many sellers... but still is it safe enough??? I mean if there is any kind of grievance..whom do we seek the help from??? and is it actually solvable???

Then there's the question of quality and genuineness of the various products being sold...

I know unless and until we trust people we wont get what we want and need... but still !!!!!

If you can affoard the prices in India, then surely you can affoard a trip to imported land. Take a weekend off, and get one. It might be cheaper and easier. You also wouldnt really need to worry about the genuine-ness of the equipment.

Yeah i do need to worry MoA.... about the problems they create at the airport ... one of my friend's tried importing a dominator .177 from UK 6 months back.. the gun is still stuck at the customs department .... tried his level best.... but poor guy still just couldn't get that back from there.... dont really know whether to blame the system or the people running it.... so my dear friend going to the "imported land" is easy.. but coming back with an airgun is not!!!!

what people forget is the hassle one has to go at the airport with imported airguns, take that in to account, thus the cost is higher, also if you buy from within India you forgo that part.

as for trust? one can hardly trust a dealer in India any way, very few dealers are trust worthy.

at the end of the day its the sellers market, or like MoA says go and get one yourself form overseas.

Hi Nash,
I understand you doubts, worries about quality and condtion of weapon.
When you are offered a box packed, brand new unused, unfired weapon-what could go wrong???
Just in case something does then the seller does help sort out things.
The same weapon if purchased by you from out of india gets problematic-then what???
Not to forget the hasseles and headaches at the airports-usually one experience is enuf for a lifetime.
Sometime back there was a thread discussing airgun import experience at airports.Chennai was on negative side.
There is a saying in hindi(its a bit out of context) "sasta hamesha acha nahi hota aur acha kabhi sasta nahi hota" meaning what comes cheap isnt always good and what is good never comes cheap.
There isnt a single dispute on the forum which remains unsolved on part of the seller.
All of us here a gun lovers, except for a corrupt one or two no one will want to hurt another persons interests.
Happy gunning
GR

Hello rafiq bhai...

:agree: I totally agree with you... "Sastha" not always means "Acha"....

there's another saying in our Dakkani Zubaan... "Sastha Maal Jaan Ko Aafath"......

What worries me the most is the quality of the items.... as a newbie to gunning... and as someone who doesn't know much technical stuff about guns... will i actually get what i pay for???

Recently i was warned and bashed up for contacting a certain Mr. T... who till a weeks back was a very prominent IFGian... He was blamed for selling counterfeit parts and accessories of some imported brand.... though i wont really blame anyone unless I know the issue first hand... but still it does create some doubts and uncertainties in our minds... and its jus plain human tendency... isn't it???

And i completely agree with you.. we cant generalise everyone based on one or two person's wrong doings / judgements...

I seriously am considering buying a PCP air rifle... I cant import it directly as i'm not a rifle club member, nor i plan to join one... and i cant bring it from abroad as a luggage coz of the stigma attached to it....

Anyway.... Hopefully i'll trust someone sooner or later and get what i really want..... insha allah

Cheers!!!

May be a bit OT, but last I read , import of 177 guns was allowed by post. Why dont you get your self a decent 177? straight from a dealer in US or UK? Ask Dev if he can give you some info on this. He's the IFG airgun wiz

Hi eljefe,

That is indeed great news all over again!!! :D
Did you mean, I could simply import any 0.177 cal without customs hassle. Does one need to be member of a shooting club to import directly?
Thanks,
Atanu

You do need to be a member of a registered air rifle club affiliated to the respective State District Rifle Association. Only then you can import. As proof of same you will have to furnish cpies of your membership card and a letter from your club stating that you are a member. You can only import .177 cal air rifle under this scheme. As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

Nash,

The above is a highly distasteful comment & you could probably do yourself & this forum a world of good by editing it. Pls remember, the entire gunning community here is in minority...& this is a worldwide phenomenon.

As regards to membership, it will take you not more than 7 days of work to get enlisted & once you have that in place you will get the commensurate benefits.

Rgds.
