Scopes and Air Rifles get along together?

Post by srswamy » Tue Jun 08, 2010 6:15 am

Hey Guys,

I have seen quite a few posts on this topic about fitting scopes on air rifles. My query is, do they get along well?
I also came across, we have a good chance of scope getting afftected due to the spring action, especially with IHP National air rifles.

So, any thoughts on whether to or not to mount a scope on an air rifle will be helpful.

Any scope with 4X zoom is sufficient for an air rifle. And...they do get along well if you buy a scope with ASR technology and mount it correctly.

Thanks for the pointer.

Wow ASR technology. Conjures up images of a Bourne like scope that sights, cooks, cleans, rangefinds......

for a high recoil resistant scope!!!

BIt like air arms promoting their pro sport trigger units as the world famous "CD" triggers, CD for computer designed!!!

I supposed they had to come up with a counter to weirauch's advertised rekord

Hi srswamy,
> YES - air rifles & scopes do compliment each other. Most modern air rifles come with a base mount for mounting scopes.
> Scopes are optical gadgets that come with lenses (elements) embedded within the scope's tube. Basic scopes come with 4 elements and sophisticated ones with 6 elements.
> The distances between them internally are highly critical that provide, magnification & clarity.
> Any disturbance to these due to shock / vibration can cause these elements to go out of alignment, resulting in poor magnification and loss of clarity - hence loss of accuracy.
> ASR technology assures that these elements are anchored properly and firmly to withstand the shock / vibration of air rifles when they are fired.
> Lastly scopes are not mandatory for air rifles, since effective range of air rifles is 30mtrs (100ft approx) - if you are comfortable with open iron sights or peep sights & still get satisfactory grouping - SO BE IT!!!
Cheers

srswamy,
And to add a little to what Brihacharan has said, remember that a scope that suits a shotgun could be destroyed by a spring gun because a springer has both forward and backward recoil.

@brihacharan, @big daddy,

Thanks a lot for the information. Further, I read and understood how the additional "kick" occurs in the spring-action air rifles. Now it makes complete sense how the lenses can be disturbed.

Now, I also understand how this ASR (Airgun Shock Reinforcement) technology is employed in the scopes to be fitted in the air rifles, with additional reinforcement at the rear to withstand the additional kick, that's special to the air rifles!

Thanks a lot people, for excellent explanations!! :)

Swamy,

Specifically which scope on which rifle are you contemplating ? If its IHP, You will need to fabricate and fit a rail. I suggest tune the IHP to eliminate vibrations. Use a One piece mount with 4 or 3 rail mounting screws and mount a scope in it. The Leapers 4X or 6X models will do well.

Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Not particularly. It was more of a general knowledge about air rifle mechanics and compatibility issues with scopes. Scope -- none. Rifle -- National 35 (0.177).

Thanks a lot for this info, I'll keep in mind and use it when I get the scope done.

The lenses in Leapers scopes are braced on both sides in the scope tube to handle the two way recoil of a springer. They are also tested extensively on a vibrating platform.

There is also a school of thought that fixed magnification scopes work better on springers but I guess that is debatable.
