Views on Diana RWS P5

I'm thinking about getting one of those. Anybody got any first hand reviews? Is it really as good as they are marketing it as?!?

Should I assume that our 'pros' have no knowledge about this gun?

Ok let me rephrase the thread... I want an air-pistol in the ~$200 range that I can pack in my mom's luggage and she can carry it to India (from the US) without any problems.

I have never seen a Diana P5 so cannot comment on it.

What is the primary purpose for this pistol?

Cost aside, if I were you, I'd be looking at:

HW40 (single stroke pneumatic) - $ 149.00
HW70 - $ 215.00
HW45 - $ 339.00
HW75M - $ 409.00

Particularly the last two.

Not a first hand review, but

1) Requires tremendous cocking effort. This is to be expected if it
really delivers anywhere close to 500 fps against rated 700fps.

2) The recoil will make you expectant of recoil each time you fire

3) It is accurate; accurate more than normally expected from a springer
may be comparable to HW 45.

4) For best results , hold it like a carbine

Primary purpose is going to be plinking... but I'll also be taking shots at doves at ~15 yards. I know you guys are going to suggest an air rifle, but I think a pistol might be less hassle at the airport then an airgun.

Well, my view again not firsthand, as I seen the L5, but have not shot it.

The L5 marketed as a magnum air pistol capable about 170m/s. It retails in Germany at Euros 229.

As compared to that Weihrauch HW 45 is again capable of 120m/s for one pump and 170m/s after two pumps retails here for Euro 259.

Power wise both are marketed to be about the same..Accuracy wise I don't know.
HW 75 definately is much better because it is recoiless. ( i own this one). I bought some 45 g pellets and they work great with my pistol.

If you ask me, why do you want the L5, why not HW 45, the price diff is not much. And HW 45 somewhat looks like a colt .45 and feels better.

Of course the HW 75 comes with a walnut sports handle with ambidexterous Safety latch. The HW 75 retails in Germany for 300 Euros.

Again my choice would be
1) HW 75
2) HW 45

...my 2 cents

The 45 is not a multi-pump springer. The power or velocity is determined by whether or not the cocking arm is cocked fully or partially.

There is a substantial price difference between the Diana and the HW45 in the U.S. but one worth paying.

So I was at a local Gun Range/Gun Shop... fired 50 rounds from a 9MM Baby Desert Eagle and then while I was looking around, saw a P5 they had on display. And man is it big?? I mean this thing is about 2 feet long... no kidding. It's relatively light for its size. And the guy said for a 700 fps rated pellet gun, it cocks easy and recoils less. Priced at $200.. it's got me thinking ... !!

I am located in Chicago, USA and I was talking about doing so here in the USA. But I guess I needed to reveal that before.

Air Pistols of any make are not suitable for making clean kills. To get into
serious hunting, get an Air Rifle while the oppurtunity lasts.
