Canon 65 (.22)

There has been a lot of discussion in the forum on the Canon 65 (.22). Thought I would get me a rifle and was torn between IHP 35 and Canon 65 specially after reading the thread on the “Best Indian made Air rifle for pest control”. I little discussion with Tirths settled the matter. The Canon it would be. I dare say Tirths swears by this rifle, and rightly so. It’s a majestic gun (compared to its Indian counterparts). Had a friend get it from Olympic Sports, a small shop behind Lal bazaar police station in Calcutta for Rs 2,700. The same rifle at Hyderabad cost Rs 5,500 to 6,000 (talk about % of profit) . It’s got a lovely stock, trigger gets softer after about 50 shots, and over all a solid build.
I took out a crow (head shot) perched at 39 meters on a post with open sights  . Aimed about 1 ½ inches above the head of the crow to get the trajectory path. In all honesty, I never expected to hit the crow… never. I guess must have been by fluke. Hook or crook, to get a clean kill at that distance really made me look at the rifle with respect. Mind you, the rifle is not yet tuned. Got very excited about the range of kill, I borrowed a Leica laser distance meter from my office to get the distance.

Attached are a few photographs of my test on the rifle.

Pellets used were Master Shot wad cutter (flat nose).

The target was shot with 6 pellets at 9.7 meters (space constraint. Will update once I take it to a field).

These pellets were shot at a metal frame about 14 meters away. I have to shoot from my 1st floor balcony to the frame some distance away in another wing on the building hence cannot place a target.

Note the even force of impact and the impact spread.

Tirths from what I gather, has played around with the IHP and Canon and knows both guns in and out. I guess he would be the right person to shed some more light if required.

My suggestion (though many may disagree) go for the Canon 65 8) .

Hi Bigdaddy,

> You have expressed my sentiments to the "T".
> Canon 65 seems to be an awesome weapon. I too have been in discussion with Tirths and am planning to go for one.
> But when I rang Olympic Sports in Kolkata, they said that it is available in Tahir Arms - Mumbai, but when I contacted them they said it was out of stock (expected by the end of this month)
> Back to Olympic Sports, they said a new lot is under production and would be available by the end of this month.
> The moment I get mine am taking it to Tirths for tuning, putting an apex seal and fixing a scope mount.
> By the way when did you get your Canon 65 - during this month?
> Lastly you are right - Tahir Arms Mumbai is quoting Rs.4500/- for it!!! What margins!!!
> Pl. keep me posted.
Cheers

Hi Brihacharan,

Got mine some time in January but did not find time to try it out. Yes it a lovely gun, a bit heavy though. It love’s Master shot wad cutter pellets. Will be trying the dome heads this weekend. I tried G Smith dome heads but was not satisfied. I have not submitted my gun to Tirths  but will be doing that shortly when I drop into Chennai. He was kind enough to agree to do the needful for the gun. You plan of sending the gun all the way from Mumbai to Chennai for a re do? I guess that’s to be appreciated. Especially when you want the expert on the same to do it. I changed the trigger guard as I did not like the boxy shape of the original. Had it fabricated locally. I am totally non technical hence this was the best I could do :D . I will post a couple of snaps of the rifle shortly.

Hi Big Daddy,

> Thanks for your prompt response.
> I already own an IHP35 22cal with a Walther 4 x 32(ASR) scope mounted on it, which gives me 1 1/2" to 2" groups at 20mtrs(60ft approx).
> Like I said after discussing endlessly with Tirths, who says that the quality of metal parts, especially the peep sight in Canon is far superior to IHP35. According to Tirths if you replace the Canon's seal(which is leather) with Apex Synthetic Seal the fps also increases considerably.
> When I get my Canon65, I plan to personally take it to Tirths at Chennai over a week-end and get his magic touch - besides I will have the pleasure of meeting him, which I keenly look forward to.
> Happy plinking with your Canon65....
Cheers

Hi Jai

Glad you've finally decided to post regd your Canon. A few pics would be much appreciated.

I've been wondering about the soft spot Tirths has for this gun , and am glad that you've developed one too.

I look forward to laying my hands on your gun - and also getting one of my own ! Luckily for me I've got a foot in Chennai too ... so Tirths is sure going to be busy. :) He had better be charging for the services and retire a decade ahead of schedule ! :D

Congrats on a nice gun .... but I'm afraid you are going to get some flack regarding the poor crow.

Cheers !

Congrats Big Dady!
Looks like they have compromised on wood. Wood was better 20yrs ago  Other quality looks ok and yes the accuracy as it was, very very decent!

Happy Shooting.

Nice gun..Congrats! apart from the awkward stock and misaligned compression tube with the wood stock its much better. What is the weight of the gun? . I would like to buy one for me.

Cheers,
Vijay
