Pellets - Ribbed OR Smooth

PBA Ammo (.177) boasts of 1200 FPS when fired thru airguns like - Gamo, Winchester Etc.
APR Ammo (.177) can actually go thru metal(as advertised) and I have even see it go thru a tractor tyre.
The common thing in the above mentioned pellets is that they both are Smooth Skirted - Does this mean that Smooth Skirted pellets perform better than ribbed ones in airguns that have rifling?
Is it right to say that Ribbed pellets are best suited for Smoothbore Airguns and that Smooth skirts are best for ones that have rifling.
I would go with - The best performance is with a smooth skirt in a Rifled barrle - this is because the rifling cuts its own grooves into the pellet when it is fired (if not throughout the length then at least at the base).
Can / Has - someone chrono the Ribbed and Smooth skirt ones to see the difference? any inputs will be appreciated.
Thanks

It is not the velocity but long distance accuracy due to better aerodynamic than the smooth one.

spin is maintained..agree with Thirths...

Then how do you explain all the smooth skirted ones for accuracy?

Sniper...think I have to roll back on my statement...I understand that best performance is achieved with high velocity airguns having rifled bores using smooth skirted pellets.....

My Thoughts exactly. and of late ribbed pellets are not used / recommended by many using them.

Logically what I can think, for 10m shooting what you need is very well made pellets. That means zero diff of weight between pellets to pellets, consistency of shape etc.
On the otherhand, it is difficult to achieve the same thing from ribbed one as it is difficult to make a metal die compare with smooth one.

I have had a competitor express disdain for ribbed pellets while air pistol shooting. Haven't noticed much of difference manually. As soon as I get some ribbed ones...will need gsmith ones to do apples to apples comparison and run em past the chrono.

Had a tin of .22 Hobby's that I'd given to my nephew for use in his model 25 (they were not doing too well in my own springers), these are ribbed pellets so if you'd like I can always whack a few for your experiment... let me know...
Cheers!
